FAP Sunday School Lesson July 11, 2026: "Jesus as the New Torah"

Topic: Jesus as the New Torah

Main Text: Matthew 17:1–5 (The Transfiguration) & Matthew 5:21–22, 27–28

Time Allocation: 30 Minutes

1. Opening Prayer (3 Minutes)

"Lord Jesus, Kayo po ang Word made flesh. Ngayon, tumitingin kami sa Inyo hindi lang bilang Savior, kundi bilang aming Teacher at King. Patahimikin Niyo po ang ibang mga boses para boses Niyo lang ang marinig namin. Amen."

2. Scripture Reading (5 Minutes)

Read: Matthew 17:1–5.

1 After six days, Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. 2 He was transfigured in front of them, and his face shone like the sun; his clothes became as white as the light. 3 Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with him. 4 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it’s good for us to be here. If you want, I will set up three shelters here: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 5 While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased. Listen to him!” (Matthew 17:1-5, CSB)

Focus tayo sa utos ng Ama: "This is my beloved Son... listen to him!"

(Note: Si Moses ang nagre-represent ng Law, si Elijah naman sa Prophets. Nawala sila; si Jesus lang ang natira.)

3. Teaching Points (10 Minutes)

"Listen to Him": Kailangan niyong makita ‘yung Transfiguration sa Matthew 17 bilang isang major 'change of administration' parang turnover ceremony kung saan bumababa na sa pwesto ‘yung old manager para sa bagong CEO. Noong tinry ni Peter na magtayo ng three equal tents isa kay Moses, isa kay Elijah, at isa kay Jesus basically ginagawa niya ‘yung mistake ng maraming believers ngayon: pinipilit ipantay ang Law at ang Gospel. Pero biglang sumingit ang God the Father mula sa cloud with a divine command, 'This is my beloved Son... Listen to Him!' Parang inagaw ng Diyos ang mikropono kay Moses (representing the Law) at kay Elijah (representing the Prophets) at inabot ito exclusively kay Jesus. 

Ang key takeaway dito, na pino-point out din ng scholars sa Hebrews 1:1-2, ay wala na tayo sa ilalim ng jurisdiction ng servant na si Moses; nasa ilalim na tayo ng Son. Kaya noong tumingala ang mga disciples at nakita nila na 'Jesus only,' nag-sysymbolize ‘yun na para sa atin ngayon, ang primary authority natin ay hindi na ang stone tablets ng Sinai, kundi ang living words ni Christ.

The "But I Say to You" Pattern: Pansinin niyo ‘yung specific pattern na ginamit ni Jesus sa Sermon on the Mount, na madalas tawaging 'antitheses.' Paulit-ulit Niyang sinasabi, 'You have heard that it was said...' na tumutukoy sa Mosaic Law, tapos biglang kakambiyo ng powerful na, 'But I say to you.' Hindi lang Niya nire-recite ang old rules; basically ina-'upgrade' o ini-escalate Niya ito from mere external behavior papunta sa deepest intentions ng puso. 

Halimbawa, sabi sa Law 'do not murder,' pero tinaas ni Jesus ang bar sabi Niya kahit ang pagkakaroon ng unrighteous anger ay violation na. Pinapakita nito na ang Kanyang New Covenant standard ay nagre-require ng transformation na higit pa sa pagsunod lang sa checklist ng do's and don'ts.

Example: Sabi ni Moses, "Do not murder." Sabi ni Jesus, "Do not even hate."

Christ is the Standard: Alam niyo, para sa ating mga believers ngayon, ang standard ay hindi na tungkol sa pagmememorya ng rulebook, kundi tungkol na sa Relationship. Under the New Covenant, hindi tayo tumitingin sa stone tablets para i-define ang righteousness; tumitingin tayo sa person ni Jesus Christ. Siya literally ang ating 'New Torah.' Ito ‘yung tinatawag ng mga theologians na mimetic ethics: hindi lang tayo sumusunod sa written code; gumagaya tayo sa isang Tao. Actually, mas mahirap ito pero mas better. Kasi habang ang old law ay nagbibigay lang ng checklist, ang pagsunod sa buhay at turo ni Jesus through the Holy Spirit ay tumatagos sa lahat sa ating attitudes, motives, at pagmamahal sa iba. Kaya Siya ang nagiging living standard na sinusunod natin.

4. Discussion Questions (7 Minutes)

Question: Paano nagkaiba ang pagsunod sa isang Tao (Jesus) kaysa sa pagsunod sa isang Code (The Ten Commandments)?

Question: Sa ating daily life, ano ang itsura ng "pakikinig sa Kanya" ("listening to Him") kumpara sa basta pag-check lang ng listahan ng do's and don'ts?

5. Summary & Closing Prayer (5 Minutes)

Summary: Si Moses ay naging faithful servant, pero si Jesus ang Son. Ang rules ng servant ay napalitan na ng buhay ng Anak. Sumusunod tayo sa Diyos sa pamamagitan ng pagtingin kay Jesus.

Prayer: "Father, salamat po na sapat na si Jesus. Inililipat namin ang aming tingin mula sa tablets of stone papunta sa mukha ng Inyong Anak. Baguhin Niyo po kami ayon sa Kanyang image. Amen."
