"Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you... that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures." 1 Corinthians 15:1-4
Since Sabbath School, the loudest and most urgent message we ever heard wasn't about grace, it was "Jesus is coming soon!" We all remember those prophecy seminars. The charts with the terrifying beasts, the Sunday Law warnings, and that heavy, constant pressure to get our characters perfect before probation closes.
Adventist theology actually teaches that the Second Coming is the "grand climax" of the Gospel. No wonder so many of us are exhausted. We grew up watching the news, bracing for a global crisis. But when you step back and actually read the New Testament, you run into a massive question: Is "Jesus is coming soon" actually the Gospel?
The word "Gospel" literally means good news. But the way the end times were taught to us? That felt like high-anxiety news. It felt like a ticking timer.
The true Gospel isn't an alarm clock. It’s the announcement of a finished work. Jesus lived the perfect life we couldn't, died to fully pay for our sins, and rose to defeat death. Under the New Covenant, our standing with God doesn't depend on passing a Sabbath test or keeping the Ten Commandments perfectly in the last days. Salvation is a complete, free gift secured at the cross. We just respond by trusting Him.
Realizing this changes everything, especially how we read prophecy. We don't have to live terrified of a coming "Time of Trouble." Remember all those times we read Matthew 24 and panicked over earthquakes and wars on the TV? Context matters. When Jesus warned about the Great Tribulation and the temple falling, He was talking to His disciples about their generation. And it happened. In A.D. 70, Rome destroyed Jerusalem and the earthly temple. That definitively closed the Old Covenant era.
We aren't waiting for the sky to fall. And we aren't waiting for the world to just get darker and darker until Jesus rescues a tiny, exhausted remnant from a ruined planet. Jesus is reigning as King right now. The millennium in Revelation 20 isn't a literal thousand years of sitting in heaven while the earth sits empty and desolate. It’s a picture of Christ’s victorious reign through His church today. The Gospel is working like leaven, spreading across the globe and changing cultures. God isn't losing in history.
Don't get me wrong. The Second Coming is our "blessed hope." Jesus will return to physically resurrect the dead and restore the world. But His return is the result of the Gospel, not the Gospel itself.
When we mix the two up, we end up preaching fear instead of freedom. We try to scare people into heaven. But you can finally breath. You don't have to carry that heavy burden of "getting ready" through your own anxious striving anymore. Because of Christ's finished work, you are already secure.
Stop scanning the news for "signs" this week, and just look at the cross. If you're carrying years of end-time anxiety, sit down and read the book of Galatians. Let the freedom of God's grace sink in. And share this with a friend who needs to know that the Good News is actually good.
