Christian Generosity under the New Covenant

Under New Covenant Theology (NCT), Christian stewardship and generosity are rooted not in the Mosaic legal system, but in the law of Christ, the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit, and the finished work of the cross.

NCT emphasizes that Jesus fulfilled the Mosaic Covenant, including its civil, ceremonial, and moral regulations as a legal code, establishing a superior New Covenant. Consequently, New Covenant believers relate to material possessions and giving through a radically different framework than Old Testament Israel.

Key Pillars of New Covenant Stewardship

• Freedom from the 10% Tithing Mandate: Tithing was an Old Covenant requirement tied to the Levitical priesthood, Israel's agrarian economy, and national sanctuary system. Under the New Covenant, believers are not under the Mosaic Law (including tithes). Generosity is governed by grace, willingness, and cheerful giving rather than a legalistic quota.
  
  
• The Principle of Gospel-Driven Generosity: Rather than a minimum 10% baseline, the New Covenant standard is Christ's self-giving love (2 Corinthians 8:9). Believers are invited to give sacrificially, joyfully, and proportionally as God has blessed them (1 Corinthians 16:2; 2 Corinthians 9:7). For some, this may mean giving 10%; for others, far more or less depending on circumstances and heart conviction.

• Total Ownership vs. Total Stewardship: Israel managed land and wealth under conditional covenant blessings and curses in Canaan. In the New Covenant, believers recognize that Jesus owns everything, 100% of our money, time, and talents, not just a 10% portion handed over on Sunday.

• Heart Transformation via the Holy Spirit: Under the Mosaic Code, giving was enforced by outward command. Under the New Covenant, the law of Christ is written on the heart (Jeremiah 31:33; Hebrews 8:10). Generosity becomes an organic fruit of the Spirit, flowing from love and gratitude rather than fear or legal coercion.

In summary, New Covenant stewardship frees the believer from legalistic compulsion while raising the bar of heart devotion. Generosity is no longer about fulfilling a tax-like obligation to maintain an earthly system, but about joyfully partnering in God's kingdom work as transformed stewards of His grace.
