Frequently Asked Question: Sabbath Command: For Israel's Deliverance or God's Rest?

Q: Hello, Doc. I was hoping you could clarify something for me. Isn't the Sabbath commanded for Israel because they were enslaved in Egypt (Deuteronomy 5:15)? But the SDA (Seventh-day Adventist) church asks, "Who enslaved God?" They claim God rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2-3).

A: The rest God took in Genesis 2 wasn't called the "Sabbath," was it? Where do they read that it was called the "Sabbath" in Genesis? It was just God's "seventh day." The term "Sabbath" was only used after the Exodus from Egypt, and the Bible only connects it to Israel, not to God.

Q: They might bring up Hebrews 4:4, 9. I remember you even used that verse when you were still an SDA in your debate with Ferriol of Pentecostal 4th Watch.

A: Even in Hebrews 4:3-4, "seventh day" is used, based on Genesis 2; "Sabbath" is never used there. It refers to God's rest, not God's day of rest. The "remaining Sabbatismos" mentioned in verse 9 refers to God's "seventh day," which isn't 24 hours.

Q: Thank you for the answer. I now have a response for my SDA friends. God bless.
