"Is It Really a Sin to Play Sports and Engage in Recreations?"

Question: Is it a sin for a Christian (especially an SDA) to participate in recreations such as sports, games, and certain worldly entertainments, according to the writings of Ellen G. White and their application of Bible verses?

Answer: Brother, we understand every believer's desire to live a holy life. However, when the standard of holiness is based on extrabiblical writings instead of our freedom in the New Covenant, we fall into the trap of legalism. Colossians 2:20-23 warns us against man-made rules like "Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch," which have an appearance of wisdom but lack any true power against the flesh.

"If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations, “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” (referring to things that all perish as they are used), according to human precepts and teachings? These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh." Colossians 2:20-23(ESV)

Let us examine the arguments of SDA defenders against sports and recreations point-by-point, and expose the logical fallacies and misuse of Scripture in them.

Refutation 1: The "Argument from Silence" on the Life of Christ

Ellen White: "I cannot find any instance in the life of Christ where He devoted time to play and amusement..." (CPTSp.309)

This is a classic Logical Fallacy: Argument from Silence (Negative Proof Fallacy). The reasoning here is: "If Jesus didn't do it, or if it isn't written that He did it, then it is a sin."

There is also no biblical record of Jesus using a toilet, brushing His teeth, or eating ice cream. Does that mean these are sins? The purpose of the Gospels is to record Christ's redemptive work and teachings for our salvation (John 20:30-31), not to be a daily diary of His 24/7 activities. If the absence of a record equals a sin, then we all sin every day in our basic routines.

"Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name." John 20:30-31(ESV)

Refutation 2: The "Genetic Fallacy" and Exaggeration

Ellen White: "Satan has devised a multitude of ways to keep men from serving God. He has invented sports and games..." (RH Sept 10, 1901)

This is a Genetic Fallacy and directly contradicts biblical theology. Satan has no power to create; he can only destroy or pervert what God has already created.

God created the human body and gave us the ability to move, enjoy, and play. In fact, the prophecy concerning the restoration of Jerusalem paints a joyful picture of games:

"And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof." (Zechariah 8:5)

If demons invented playing, why is it part of God's peaceful and blessed promise?

Refutation 3: The Misapplication of 1 Corinthians 10:31 and 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Ellen White: 1 Cor. 10:31 and 2 Tim. 3:16-17 are used to claim that sports are not "good works" and do not "glorify God."

This is an Out of Context Interpretation.

• 2 Timothy 3:16-17 is about the sufficiency of Scripture to teach the way of salvation and righteousness; it is not a prohibition list for hobbies.

"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." 2 Timothy 3:16-17(ESV)

• 1 Corinthians 10:31 ("Whatever you do... do all to the glory of God") was written by Paul in the context of Christian liberty (eating meat offered to idols), not to be a legalistic straitjacket. How do we glorify God in sports? Through physical fitness (stewardship of the body, 1 Corinthians 6:19), developing teamwork, discipline, and displaying Christian character (sportsmanship) on the court or field.
  
  

Refutation 4: The "Slippery Slope" and "False Dilemma" in Physical Activities

Ellen White: Chess, tennis, and basketball are forbidden because they become a "school of brutality," and it is better to do "manual labor" or cleaning (Education 210, CPTS 354).

This contains the Slippery Slope Fallacy (assuming that playing basketball automatically turns someone into a murderer or a brute) and a False Dilemma (claiming the only options are sports OR manual labor).

Recreation was given by God for the rest and re-creation of the mind and body. Insisting that manual labor is the only acceptable physical exercise removes the concept of grace and rest. Playing board games like chess develops critical thinking, not idolatry.

Biblical Perspective: The Holy Spirit Used Sports as a Good Example

If sports and games are inventions of Satan that degrade morality, why did the Apostle Paul use sports terminology to illustrate growth in the Christian life? The Holy Spirit would not use something inherently evil to illustrate holiness.

Let us look at what the Scripture says:

• Track and Field (Running): "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize." (1 Corinthians 9:24)

• Boxing: "Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave..." (1 Corinthians 9:26-27)

• Wrestling / Athletics: "Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules." (2 Timothy 2:5)

Sports demand discipline, focus, and endurance, qualities that are highly valued under our New Covenant theology as believers.

The 3 Questions for SDAs

To further expose the deception and legalism behind these prohibitions, ask these three questions to anyone defending these doctrines:

1. Did the Holy Spirit make a mistake by using a "demonic invention" like sports to teach Christian discipline in 1 Corinthians 9?

2. If sports are literally Satan's invention, why did EGW say she doesn't condemn "the simple exercise of playing ball" can we participate "a little bit" in a demonic invention without sinning?

"I do not condemn the simple exercise of playing ball; but this, even in its simplicity, may be overdone. I shrink always from the almost sure result which follows in the wake of these amusements. It leads to an outlay of means that should be expended in bringing the light of truth to souls that are perishing out of Christ." (The Adventist Home, p. 499)

3. Where in the Bible does it say Satan has the creator's power to invent things that bring joy and fitness, rather than just perverting God's good gifts?

We are called to freedom in Christ, not to be placed under the heavy yoke of man-made rules. Enjoy your games, take care of your body, and use sports to build relationships with others so you can share the Gospel with them. All of this clearly brings glory to God!

Welcome back to the Investigating Adventism Live Q&A Podcast! Today, we are going to dive straight into a very crucial topic: How do people actually view Ellen G. White today?

To set the stage for our Q&A, we are pulling from Appendix A of Jud Lake’s book, Ellen White Under Fire. Lake provides a very helpful taxonomy, a breakdown of the seven different ways people, both inside and outside the church, perceive EGW.

Five Views Inside the Adventist Church

Let's unpack these seven views real quick, so we know exactly where everyone is coming from.

View 1: The Perfect Prophet

This group holds a strict, almost literal view of EGW's inspiration. They believe her writings are completely free from historical or theological error. In practice, if not in theory, they place her writings on the exact same level of authority as the Bible.

View 2: The Human Prophet

This is a middle-ground view. They believe EGW was inspired through her thoughts, not strict word-for-word dictation. They emphasize her human side, admit that her writings (especially the early ones) contain errors, and tend to value her later works much more than her early ones.

View 3: The Postcanonical Prophet (The Official SDA Stance)

This is the official position of the modern church. They balance the human and divine sides, believing her writings have no major theological errors but might have minor historical discrepancies. They view her as fully authoritative for the church, but technically subordinate to the Bible.

View 4: The Irrelevant Prophet

This group is mostly made up of the youth and new converts. They know the name Ellen White, but they don't really know much about her, and, honestly, they aren't very interested.

View 5: The Erroneous Prophet

These are the progressive Adventists. They have a very low view of her prophetic ministry. They believe her writings are full of errors across the board; they toss out most of her early writings, and they actively want the church to move away from using EGW as a prophetic authority.

Two Views Outside the Adventist Church

View 6: The False Prophet

This group is made up mostly of former SDAs and evangelical critics. They flat-out reject her prophetic status, arguing that she taught false doctrines and made untruthful claims. They actively campaign against her ministry.

View 7: The Historical Figure

These are usually secular academics or non-Adventist scholars. They don't believe she was inspired at all, but they recognize her as a highly influential and gifted figure in American religious history.

Impact on the Current SDA Debate

Now, how does this taxonomy actually impact the massive debate raging inside the church today between the Last Generation Theology (LGT) camp and Mainstream/Progressive Adventists?

If we look closely at this list, it exposes a very uncomfortable reality for the modern church. The LGT and Historic Adventist camps sit squarely in View 1 (The Perfect Prophet). While Mainstream Adventists love to label the LGT group as extremists or fanatics, the historical truth is that the LGT groups are the true descendants of the original SDA church. They are the ones actually maintaining the continuity of early Adventism. The pioneers did not treat EGW's writings as just "helpful advice" mixed with minor errors; they treated her words as the absolute, unquestionable voice of God for the remnant church.

On the flip side, current Mainstream and Progressive SDAs are hiding behind View 3 and View 5. Why? Because they are actively covering up the historical facts. Ever since the Questions on Doctrine dialogues in the 1950s, the mainstream leadership has been busy reinterpreting and sanitizing EGW's teachings.

They downplay her strict, perfectionistic early writings and explain away her theological anomalies just so they can disguise themselves as "Evangelical Adventists." They want a seat at the mainstream Christian table. But to do that, they have to soften Ellen White. They try to have it both ways, claiming she is an authoritative prophet while simultaneously stripping her of the actual authority she claimed to have.

So, as we open up the floor for Q&A today, keep this in mind: The historic LGT believers aren't the ones changing the religion; they are just practicing the original faith of their founders. It is the modern progressive church that is rewriting its own history to fit into an evangelical mold.

If you grew up in the Adventist church here in the Philippines, or if you know someone who did, you know how deep the culture goes. We love the community, we love the potlucks, but beneath the surface, there is often a quiet, heavy burden of anxiety.

Today, we’re answering two huge questions. Let’s get straight to it.

Question #1: “Since you were SDA for so long, is it really their standing that obedience to the law is required for salvation?”

The short, honest answer? Yes. I know that sounds harsh, and a lot of current members will quickly say, "No, we believe in grace!" But this isn't a misunderstanding from outsiders. This comes straight from the top, from their prophet, Ellen G. White. She wrote it plainly, multiple times, across different publications. There is absolutely no need to read between the lines here.

Let's look at her own words.

“The terms of salvation for every son and daughter of Adam are here outlined. It is plainly stated that the condition of gaining eternal life is obedience to the commandments of God.” (Ellen G. White, Review and Herald, October 26, 1897)

Notice she says, "condition of gaining eternal life." This was published in the Review and Herald, the official SDA periodical. This isn't just a slip of the pen; it directly ties your salvation to your obedience, rather than solely to Christ’s finished work on the cross.

Here’s another one from a year later:

“Obedience to the law of the ten commandments is the condition of salvation.” (Ellen G. White, Review & Herald, May 3, 1898)

"Condition of salvation." That is completely unambiguous. It doesn’t mean obedience is the fruit or the evidence of salvation; she is teaching that it is the requirement. And she takes it further, specifically pointing to the Sabbath:

“It means eternal salvation to keep the Sabbath holy unto the Lord. God has declared, ‘Them that honor Me I will honor.’ 1 Samuel 2:30.” (Ellen G. White, Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 6, p. 356)

She uses 1 Samuel 2:30 here, but if you look at the original context, God is talking about judging Eli’s priestly family. He wasn't giving a promise of eternal salvation for Sabbath-keepers. That is textual manipulation, forcing Scripture into a framework it was never meant to hold.

Under New Covenant theology, we understand that Christ fulfilled the law. The Old Covenant demands, including the Sabbath, were shadows pointing to Jesus, who is our ultimate rest. But the SDA system operates on a different logic:

1. Step 1: Obedience is the condition of eternal life.

2. Step 2: Obedience to the Ten Commandments equals salvation.

3. Step 3: Obedience is the only way to earn God’s favor.

4. Step 4: Sabbath-keeping equals eternal salvation.

Bottom line: No Sabbath, no salvation. That’s what their prophet taught.

And it gets heavier. Her writings demand a standard of impossible perfection. She taught that believers must eventually stand before a holy God "without a mediator" (Great Controversy, p. 425), and that Jesus won't return until His character is "perfectly reproduced" in His people (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 69).

In our Filipino culture, where religious obedience, utang na loob (debt of gratitude), and avoiding hiya (shame) are already such heavy burdens, this teaching just magnifies fear and guilt. It produces spiritual burnout instead of the rest Jesus promised.

So why do most SDA members not know this? It comes down to selective quoting. Leaders will highlight the "grace-friendly" lines to ordinary members and present a mainstream evangelical face to outsiders. But inside, the Spirit of Prophecy system is enforced.

It breaks my heart, honestly. Many sincere Filipinos inside the SDA church truly love God. But they’re trapped. They whisper, “saved by grace,” but deep down, the fear whispers back:

* “You're saved… but did you keep the Sabbath?”

* “You're saved… but did you eat pork?”

* “You're saved… but is your character spotless?”

Friends, that is not the gospel. That is bondage.

Question #2: “In SDA, if someone stops obeying the law before death, are they no longer saved?”

Again, the answer is yes, according to their Investigative Judgment doctrine.

Since 1844, they claim God has been auditing the records of believers. If you fail in your obedience at the end of your life, especially when it comes to Sabbath-keeping, your name can literally be erased from the Book of Life.

That means you have zero assurance. There is always a "pero" (but) hanging over your head. Compare that to the Bible’s promise in Romans 8:1: "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."

Let's look at a quick comparison between the SDA system and what the Bible actually teaches.

The SDA System (Ellen G. White)	The Truth (The Bible)
Obedience is the condition for salvation.	Grace through faith is enough (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Sabbath-keeping secures eternal salvation.	Eternal life is a free gift to those who believe (John 5:24).
God's favor must be earned through perfect obedience.	Grace is unmerited favor; it cannot be earned.
Character perfection is the goal to be saved.	In Christ, we are already perfected before the Father (Hebrews 10:14).
Believers will stand without a mediator in the end.	Jesus always lives to intercede for us (Hebrews 7:25).

The blood of Christ is not just a down payment. It is the FULL PAYMENT. When Jesus cried out on the cross, "Tetelestai", It is finished, He meant the debt was fully paid. You do not need to top it up with your Sabbath attendance or your own personal holiness for the Father to accept you. We stand before God not because of our track record, but because of Jesus' perfect track record.

Real Talk Reflection

"Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life." John 5:24 (ESV)

Notice the tense Jesus uses here. He says the one who believes has eternal life. Present tense. Right now. You don't get it only after you pass a heavenly audit. Mayroon na ngayon.

Call to Action: If you're tired of constantly trying to obey just to make sure you're saved, let it go. If you're exhausted from carrying the heavy weight of perfection, it's time to drop it. Come to Jesus. He is your true Sabbath and your real rest. Step out of the bondage of the law and into the freedom of the New Covenant. Trust that His blood is completely enough to cover all your sins past, present, and future.

"From 1843 to 1863: Exposing the Constant Changes in Ellen White's Prophetic Charts!"

We're diving deep into a piece of history that really shook the foundation of early Adventism. As we look into this, we know that the Word of God must always be our ultimate standard. Today, we're going to unpack the controversial 1843 prophetic chart.

Back in 1850, Ellen G. White claimed she had a divine vision that settled the prophetic status of the famous illustrated chart circulated by William Miller's followers. She said that the Lord's own hand directed it, making it "unalterable," meaning it absolutely couldn't be changed. The crazy part is, she claimed there was a math error in the chart because the Lord deliberately hid it from them! Case closed, right?

The 1843 chart that Ellen White herself declared came straight from God and wasn't supposed to be altered.

But wait, fast forward a few years, and they actually changed the chart anyway! The SDA Church ended up completely abandoning some of its most prominent calculations. Let’s look at the evidence.

William Miller was a farmer who studied his KJV Bible and concluded that Christ would return in 1843. Using what became known as "Miller's Rules," he came up with 15 mathematical proofs that all pointed exactly to 1843. To make the message easier to share, Charles Fitch and Apollos Hale put together an elaborate chart in 1842. It was packed with drawings of the beasts from Daniel and Revelation. Ellen White fully believed that angels were guiding Miller, totally ignoring the fact that he was heavily involved in Freemasonry at the time.

What was the Disappointment?

When 1843 passed and nothing happened, they realized they had made a calendar mistake: there is no "year zero" in our calendar. If you count 2300 years forward from 457 BC, it actually lands on 1844. Samuel Snow refined this calculation to pinpoint October 22, 1844. EGW backed this up, calling it divine light.

But when October 22 came, absolutely nothing happened. This became known as the famous Great Disappointment. Thousands of people lost their properties and life savings. The noble thing to do would have been to just be humble and admit the mistake. Instead, the founders of what would eventually become the SDA Church doubled down and insisted they were right all along.

What did Ellen White claim?

To save their collapsing prophetic movement by 1850, EGW had a very timely vision.

"I have seen that the 1843 chart was directed by the hand of the Lord, and that it should not be altered; that the figures were as He wanted them; that His hand was over and hid a mistake in some of the figures, so that none could see it, until His hand was removed." (Ellen G. White,  Early Writings. (1882), p. 74)

In this article, she claimed five specific things:

1) The 1843 chart was directed by the hand of the Lord.

2) It should not be altered.

3) The figures were exactly as God wanted them.

4) God's hand hid a mistake in some of the figures.

5) None could see the mistake until God's hand was removed.

The biggest issue here is the severe theological implication. By combining these five claims, they are basically making the Lord an author of confusion and deception. If God's hand literally directed the chart and intentionally hid a simple math error, it means He deliberately set up His people for a massive, catastrophic disappointment. That completely contradicts the clear biblical truth that God cannot lie (Hebrews 6:18).

"So that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us." Hebrews 6:18(ESV)

It also doesn't make sense logically. She explicitly claimed the chart "should not be altered" because the figures were exactly how God wanted them. But history shows that they changed those exact same figures in their 1850 and 1863 charts anyway. Ultimately, this reads less like a divine revelation and more like a desperate theological cover-up just to save face after a failed prediction.

Let's look at the math. All the calculations that ended in 1843 failed. That "2520 Years" prophecy? It was a total flop, and the SDA Biblical Research Institute itself later declared it completely invalid.

"The 1843 chart was used by the Millerites with good success, but not everything on the chart is correct. One of the issues concerns the 2520 years." (Gerhard Pfandl, The 1843 Chart and the 2520 years. Biblical Research Institute)

"Therefore, the interpretation of Leviticus 26:18 as a time prophecy is incorrect, and any message making belief in such a prophecy a test is misguided." (Wahlen, Clinton. Does Leviticus 26 Contain a Time Prophecy of 2,520 Years? Biblical Research Institute)

Pretty much only the 2300 days survived, but they only rescued it by changing the date (from 1843 to 1844) AND swapping the event from the Second Coming to an invisible "Sanctuary Cleansing" up in heaven. If the Lord really directed that chart, He sure made a ton of miscalculations. That simply doesn't align with the God of the Bible.

Was the chart altered?

Oh, definitely. Even though EGW clearly said it "should not be altered," they changed it big time.

• The 1850 Revision: They made a brand new chart. They changed the central date to 1844 and added new doctrines like the Three Angels' Messages and the Heavenly Sanctuary. That huge 2520-year calculation was reduced to a tiny footnote that, ironically, still pointed to 1843.

• The 1863 Revision: By the time the SDA Church formally organized, they released a third chart. In this one, the 2520 prophecy was completely erased!

How did they justify it?

Here is the crazy part. To sell the new 1850 chart, which would cost around $79 in today's money, EGW decided to use Habakkuk 2:2-3 ("Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables...").

This is straight-up scriptural hijacking! Any serious Bible student knows Habakkuk was actually talking about the appointed time for Babylon’s judgment in the 6th century BC. But EGW claimed it was a prophecy specifically for their commercial lithograph chart printed in Massachusetts in 1850.

Did God hide the mistake?

This is honestly the most disturbing theological claim. Miller's mistake was really just a basic subtraction error about the missing year zero. Any competent almanac-maker could have spotted it. But EGW claimed God deliberately hid it.

Think about the implications of this: Because the Lord supposedly "hid" this, thousands of families suffered spiritual and financial ruin. Are we really supposed to believe that the Creator of the universe personally intervened to stop humans from doing correct math just to engineer a catastrophic disappointment? That completely defames God's character. "It is impossible for God to lie" (Hebrews 6:18).

Was it truly hidden?

No! As early as June 1843, even before the disappointment happened, Joshua Himes had already published an article about the zero-year issue in the Signs of the Times magazine. He explained that the 2300 days would actually stretch into 1844. All it took was basic arithmetic. There was absolutely no "divine hand" hiding it from public view.

What is the defense?

The excuse from the White Estate (via Herbert Douglass) totally backfired and turned into an accidental confession. They essentially argued: What if Miller had actually taught the "true significance" of 1844 (that invisible sanctuary cleansing)? No one would have listened to him!

"What would have happened if William Miller had preached the true significance of 1844? What kind of public response would he have received if he had proclaimed the truth about a change in Christ's ministry in the heavenly sanctuary instead of emphasizing His imminent return? No one would have listened to him; no one would have been stirred to read the Bible." (Title: Messenger of the Lord: The Prophetic Ministry of Ellen G. White, p. 490)

So, they are essentially arguing that the truth was so boring that the Lord had to use a lie just to build a church? That's crazy. The White Estate also released an unpublished manuscript 164 years later, adding the phrase "without inspiration" to give EGW a convenient escape hatch for altering the chart.

"...not a peg of it should be altered without inspiration." (Letters and Manuscripts with Annotations, p.243)

Why does this matter?

We have to go back to the clear standard of Scripture, specifically Deuteronomy 18:22. The biblical test for a prophet is simple: "if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken."

There is absolutely no exception in the Bible for prophecies that fail on earth but supposedly get some "invisible fulfillment" up in heaven. EGW endorsed failed calculations, claimed they were unalterable, altered them anyway, and then blamed God for the original errors. As believers resting in the New Covenant, we anchor our faith firmly on the finished work of Christ and the infallible truth of Scripture, not on some altered charts from history.
