INVESTIGATING ADVENTISM Q&A: “Seventh‑Day Adventists ‘True Church’ Dilemma: Isang Legacy ng Panlilinlang!”

INVESTIGATING ADVENTISM Q&A: “Seventh‑Day Adventists ‘True Church’ Dilemma: Isang Legacy ng Panlilinlang!”

The "Invisible Church" vs. The Institution

Sabi nga ni Dr. Alister McGrath sa kanyang librong Christianity’s Dangerous Idea: The Protestant Revolution: A History from the Sixteenth Century to the Twenty‑First, p. 243:

"One of the most significant and distinctive Protestant beliefs concerns the nature of the church... The Protestant response to these entirely proper questions was to offer a new vision of what it meant to be a 'Christian church.' As we shall see, the new theory removed any necessity for institutional continuity with the medieval church.”

The "Fallacy" of Infallibility and Sincerity

"There is no excuse for anyone in taking the position that there is no more truth to be revealed and that all our expositions of Scripture are without an error... No true doctrine will lose anything by close investigation." (The Review and Herald, Dec 20, 1892)

The Deception: How SDA Handles the "Invisible Church"

"Seventh-day Adventists have never sought to equate their church with the church invisible... we do not believe that we alone constitute the true children of God."

Sabi ng talata: "And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold... there shall be one fold, and one shepherd." (KJV).

Bible Verse:

"But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: 'The Lord knows those who are his,' and, 'Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.'" 2 Timothy 2:19 (ESV)

"The Greenland Paradox: Bakit 'Impossible' ang Seventh-day Adventism sa Bansang Ito?"

A Pastoral Appeal to the Evangelical Church: Why We Must Stop Presenting Seventh-day Adventism as a Normal Christian Denomination!

For many decades, evangelical churches, seminaries, and campus ministries have openly welcomed Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) speakers, materials, and doctrinal presentations as if Adventism were simply another Christian denomination just like Baptists, Methodists, Pentecostals, or Presbyterians. Many do this with sincerity, believing the SDA Church teaches the same essential doctrines of the Christian faith.

But as a pastor, a former Adventist, and a witness to how many souls have been drawn into Adventism because evangelicals were too friendly and too trusting, I must offer this pastoral appeal with both gentleness and urgency:

Evangelical churches must stop presenting the SDA Church as if it were theologically orthodox or part of the historic Christian faith. Because it is not.

This is not anger, not hostility. This is shepherding. This is love for the Body of Christ. And this is a warning born from experience. Adventism may use Christian words, but its foundation is different, built on Ellen G. White’s visions, the doctrine of investigative judgment, and a Sabbath-centered identity that changes the meaning of the gospel. To call it “just another denomination” is to confuse the flock and to open the door for deception. True love means protecting the church from false teaching, even when that teaching looks close to the truth.

1. We Must Learn from the Mistakes of the 1950s: The Walter Martin Tragedy

In the 1950s, respected apologist Dr. Walter Martin tried to study the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church carefully. His heart was sincere, and he wanted to be fair. Because of this, he listened to the official SDA leaders and trusted their words. Based on the selective information they gave him, he concluded that Adventism could be counted as part of the Christian family, similar to Baptists, Methodists, Pentecostals, or Presbyterians. He believed the SDA leadership was honest about their doctrines. But later in life, he realized this was a mistake.

Martin discovered that SDA leaders were not fully transparent. They hid the true authority of Ellen G. White, even though her writings still function as a prophet’s voice inside the church. They minimized or redefined the Investigative Judgment, a doctrine that changes the meaning of the gospel by teaching that believers are judged based on their record of obedience. They softened their remnant theology, which claims that only Adventists are the true end-time people of God. They downplayed the Sabbath as the final test of loyalty, even though in their writings it remains central. And they concealed the fact that they still teach Sunday worship is the Mark of the Beast, a doctrine that directly condemns millions of Christians worldwide.

Because of these discoveries, Martin admitted before his death that he had been deceived. He confessed that his earlier conclusion had unintentionally opened the door for many evangelicals to be misled by Adventism. His tragedy was not only personal; it became a warning for the wider church. Yet until today, many pastors, seminaries, and schools have not learned from this historical lesson. They continue to treat Adventism as if it is orthodox, when in reality its foundation is different. This is why we must remember the Walter Martin tragedy: sincerity without discernment can lead to compromise, and compromise can lead to confusion in the Body of Christ.

2. What Evangelicals Keep Overlooking: Adventism Has Two Faces

When Adventists speak to the public or to evangelical churches, they show a soft and friendly face. They say things like: “We believe in salvation by grace.” “We believe in the Trinity.” “We follow the Bible.” “We love Jesus.” “We keep the Sabbath because it’s a blessing.” These words sound very evangelical, and many pastors or church members feel comfortable because they hear familiar language. But this is only the outside face. Inside the SDA Church, in their official doctrines, books, seminaries, Sabbath School lessons, and fundamental beliefs, the real teachings appear, and these teachings place them outside the circle of historic Christian orthodoxy.

The reality is that Adventism has two faces: one for outsiders and one for insiders. For outsiders, they present half-truths, carefully chosen words that hide the harder realities. For insiders, they teach doctrines that change the gospel itself. Ellen G. White is still treated as the final authority, even though they claims to follow the Bible alone. The Investigative Judgment is still central, teaching that believers are judged based on their record of obedience, not simply on Christ’s finished work. The Sabbath is still taught as the final test of loyalty, and Sunday worship is still described as the Mark of the Beast. Their “remnant” theology still claims that only Adventists are the true end-time people of God. These are not small differences; these are teachings that redefine salvation, the church, and the gospel.

Evangelicals must be aware of their half-true introduction designed to make Adventism look safe and evangelical, while hiding the hard realities underneath. This is why evangelicals must be careful. Adventism’s public face is designed to gain trust, but its inner face reveals a system that stands outside Christian orthodoxy. To overlook this is to risk opening the door for deception, confusion, and compromise in the Body of Christ.

I believe the leadership of PCEC (Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches) has only become a victim of SDA deception. My prayer is for the leaders in PCEC that the sin of compromise in the Body of Christ here in the Philippines will be exposed, and that they will be awakened from this confusion and return to clear discernment in the gospel.

3. The Missing Truths Every Evangelical Needs to Know

Below are the doctrines Adventists rarely reveal when speaking to evangelicals. This is why churches must NOT host open SDA presentations because they will not give the full story.

A. Adventism is Built on the Authority of Ellen G. White

Adventists will not usually tell you directly, but historically and officially, their entire system is built upon the authority of Ellen G. White. She is regarded as the inspired prophetic messenger of the end times, and her writings are described by the SDA Church itself as “authoritative truth” and “continuing and binding.” This means her words are not treated as optional devotional material, but as a permanent source of doctrine. In fact, SDA baptismal vows require every new member to confess belief in her prophetic gift, showing that loyalty to Ellen White is part of the foundation of Adventist identity.

Because of this, Adventists do not neutrally read the Bible. They read Scripture through the lens of her visions, interpreting passages according to her authority. The most distinctive SDA doctrine, the Investigative Judgment, exists only because Ellen White claimed to see it in a vision. It does not come from Scripture itself, but from her prophetic claims. Without Ellen White, this doctrine collapses. This shows that the SDA Church is not built on the gospel of Christ alone, but on the visions of a nineteenth-century prophetess.

A church that depends on an end-time prophet for its identity, doctrines, and authority cannot be considered evangelical Christianity. Evangelical faith is built on the finished work of Christ and the sufficient authority of Scripture. Adventism, by contrast, is built on a prophet whose writings are binding for all members. This is not the mark of orthodoxy; it is the mark of a cultic structure. And this is why evangelicals must be discerning: to welcome Adventism as “just another denomination” is to ignore the central role of Ellen White, and to risk confusing the flock with a system that redefines the gospel itself.

B. The Investigative Judgment: The Most Dangerous Doctrine Evangelicals Ignore

One of the most hidden but most dangerous teachings inside the SDA Church is the doctrine of the Investigative Judgment. Adventists teach that Christ’s atonement was not finished at the cross, but that Jesus entered a second phase of ministry only in 1844, based on their misinterpretation of Daniel 8:14. According to this doctrine, human salvation is still under investigation in heaven, and the final outcome depends on your works, your obedience, and your performance. In this system, assurance of salvation is impossible because you cannot know if you are truly saved until the heavenly records are examined and your life is judged.

This teaching is the exact opposite of the gospel revealed in Hebrews, Romans, and Ephesians, where the finished work of Christ on the cross is declared once for all, and believers are assured of salvation by grace through faith, not by works. Hebrews 10:14 says clearly, “By one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.” Romans 8:1 proclaims, “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Ephesians 2:8-9 reminds us, “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith… not by works, so that no one can boast.” The Investigative Judgment denies these truths and replaces them with fear, uncertainty, and performance-based religion.

Yet most evangelicals do not know this, because Adventists rarely teach these doctrines openly to outsiders. They present a soft version of their faith in public, but the Investigative Judgment is taught only once someone is already inside their system. This is why it is so dangerous: it hides behind friendly language, but at its core, it redefines the gospel and undermines the assurance believers have in Christ. Evangelicals must be warned—this doctrine is not a small difference; it is a direct contradiction of the finished work of Jesus.

C. Sabbath as the Final Test and Sunday as the Mark of the Beast

One of the most serious teachings inside Adventism is their doctrine about the Sabbath and the end times. Adventists teach that the Saturday Sabbath will be the last-day test of loyalty to God. They say that all Christians who worship on Sunday, even those who sincerely love Jesus, will receive the Mark of the Beast. They also teach that all denominations, whether Baptist, Pentecostal, Catholic, Methodist, or others, will eventually become part of Babylon, the false system of religion. In their theology, only the SDA Church is the “remnant” with the end-time truth, and only those who keep the Sabbath will stand faithful when the final crisis comes.

This is not a small doctrinal difference. This is spiritual exclusivism, very similar to the claims of Jehovah’s Witnesses and Iglesia ni Cristo, who also say that salvation is found only inside their group. Adventism’s teaching about Sabbath as the final test and Sunday as the Mark of the Beast creates a cultic structure, not evangelical theology. It denies the unity of the Body of Christ and condemns millions of sincere believers who worship on Sunday. It also redefines salvation, making Sabbath-keeping the dividing line between the saved and the lost, instead of faith in Christ alone.

The Bible teaches clearly that salvation is by grace through faith, not by observing days or rituals (Romans 14:5–6, Colossians 2:16–17, Ephesians 2:8–9). To make Sabbath the final test is to add law to the gospel. To call Sunday worship the Mark of the Beast is to condemn the majority of Christians worldwide. This is why evangelicals must be discerning. Adventism’s Sabbath doctrine is not just about a day of worship; it is about redefining the gospel and claiming exclusive authority as the only true church. That is cultic theology, not evangelical Christianity.

D. The SDA Gospel Is a Mixture of Grace + Works

Yes, Adventists will often say, “Salvation is by grace.” But when you look deeper into their official writings, you see the full teaching is very different. They teach that “Christ’s work was not completed at the cross.” They insist that “We must perfect our characters before probation closes.” They declare that “Only the obedient will be justified in the final judgment.” And they claim that “Sins are not yet blotted out.” These statements show clearly that the SDA gospel is not the gospel of Paul, not the gospel of the early church, and not the gospel preached by Reformation Christianity.

The true gospel, as Paul wrote in Romans, Galatians, and Ephesians, proclaims that salvation is by grace through faith alone, not by works, so that no one can boast (Ephesians 2:8-9). Hebrews 10:14 says, “By one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.” This means Christ’s work was finished at the cross, and believers already have assurance of salvation because of His completed sacrifice. But the SDA gospel mixes grace with human effort, creating a system of fear, performance, and uncertainty. Instead of resting in Christ’s finished work, members are told to strive for character perfection, to fear probation closing, and to hope that their obedience will be enough in the final judgment.

This mixture of grace plus works is not good news; it is a heavy burden. It denies the assurance that the gospel gives, and it keeps people trapped in anxiety about whether they are truly saved. Evangelicals must understand this difference. Adventism’s teaching is not simply another Christian emphasis; it is a redefinition of salvation itself. To call it “grace” while requiring works for final justification is to preach another gospel, one that Paul warned against in Galatians 1:6-9. This is why the SDA gospel must be exposed: it is not the freedom of Christ, but a system of fear, performance, and uncertainty.

4. Why Evangelical Churches Must Stop Hosting SDA Presentations

When evangelical churches speak kindly about SDA doctrines or invite SDA pastors to “explain their beliefs,” they may think they are promoting dialogue or showing Christian unity. But in reality, they unintentionally give credibility to a heterodox system, open the door for evangelicals to be recruited, signal to the congregation that SDA is simply “another Christian group,” allow spiritual deception to enter the church, and repeat the same tragic mistake made in the 1950s when Walter Martin was misled by selective information from SDA leaders. Adventists are very strategic in how they present themselves. They rarely convert evangelicals through open debate, because in debate, their doctrines can be exposed. Instead, they convert through the appearance of similarity using familiar Christian language, emphasizing grace, love, and Bible study, while hiding the deeper doctrines that redefine the gospel.

This is why evangelical churches must stop enabling this pattern. Hosting SDA presentations is not harmless; it is dangerous. It confuses the flock, blurs the line between orthodoxy and heterodoxy, and gives Adventism a platform to spread its half-truths. The SDA Church has two faces: one soft and friendly for outsiders, and one doctrinally rigid for insiders. When evangelicals allow SDA pastors to speak in their pulpits or classrooms, they are only shown the soft face, while the hard realities remain hidden. This is not true dialogue; it is deception. True shepherding means protecting the Body of Christ from false teaching, even when that teaching comes dressed in familiar Christian words. To continue hosting SDA presentations is to risk the spiritual health of the church and to repeat the same mistake that history has already warned us about. Evangelicals must be discerning, must be firm, and must guard the gospel from compromise.

5. A Pastoral Call to Action: How Churches Can Protect Their People from SDA Deception

If evangelical churches in the Philippines and beyond truly desire to guard the flock of Christ, then they must take concrete steps to protect their people from the deception of the SDA system.

The first and most important step is to teach the real gospel clearly and repeatedly. A church that is firmly grounded in the finished work of Christ on the cross, and in the assurance of salvation by grace through faith alone, will be much harder to deceive. When believers know the truth deeply, false teaching loses its power.

Second, pastors must educate their members about cultic groups and pseudo-Christian systems not with hate, but with truth and clarity. The Bible warns us that wolves will come in sheep’s clothing (Matthew 7:15), and part of shepherding is to expose these dangers. This means explaining how groups like SDA use familiar Christian language but redefine the gospel underneath.

Third, churches must not invite SDA pastors to preach, lecture, or present in their pulpits or classrooms. Adventists will not reveal their full doctrine in such settings; they will only present the attractive parts, the soft face that sounds evangelical. To give them a platform is to open the door for deception.

Fourth, young people must be trained in discernment. Most SDA converts come from evangelical youth groups where theology was weak or never taught well. If our young people only know songs and activities but not the gospel, they are vulnerable. Churches must invest in teaching doctrine, apologetics, and biblical discernment to the next generation.

Fifth, pastors and teachers must use the Bible and church history to expose SDA errors. Show clearly how their doctrines contradict Scripture, the early church, and the gospel recovered in the Reformation. When believers see the contrast, they will understand that Adventism is not simply “another denomination” but a system outside Christian orthodoxy.

Finally, we must love Adventists as people, but we must not legitimize their theology. Compassion does not require compromise. To love them means to share the true gospel with them, not to affirm their false system. The church must be both gentle and firm, gentle in love, firm in truth. This is the pastoral call to action: to guard the flock, to protect the gospel, and to awaken the Body of Christ from confusion.

Conclusion: A Shepherd’s Warning in Love

This message is not about attacking individuals, because most Adventists are sincere, kind, and devout people who truly believe they are serving God. But sincerity alone does not make false doctrine true. A person can be sincere and still be sincerely wrong. And when wrong teaching is mixed with sincerity, it becomes even more dangerous, because it looks safe and trustworthy on the outside while hiding error underneath.

For the sake of the Gospel, for the safety of the flock, and for faithfulness to Christ, evangelicals must stop treating the SDA Church as if it were a normal Christian denomination. Adventism is not simply another branch of Christianity; it is a movement built on the authority of an end-time prophet, Ellen G. White, on a false doctrine of investigative judgment, on a fear-based salvation system that denies assurance, and on an unbiblical view of Christ’s finished work at the cross. These are not small differences; they strike at the very heart of the gospel itself.

Pastors, protect the flock entrusted to you. Do not allow confusion to enter the pulpit. Teachers, speak the truth in love, even when it is unpopular, because love without truth is compromise, and truth without love is harshness. Churches, be wise and discerning, remembering that wolves often come in sheep’s clothing, and deception often comes dressed in familiar Christian words. To treat Adventism as orthodox is to blur the line between truth and error, and to risk the spiritual health of the Body of Christ.

And yet, even as we warn, we must pray. May the grace of Christ lead many Adventists out of deception and into the freedom of the true Gospel. May they discover that salvation is not by Sabbath-keeping, not by investigative judgment, not by character perfection, but by the finished work of Jesus Christ alone. And may the evangelical church stand firm, clear, and loving, guarding the gospel and guiding souls into the joy of assurance in Christ.

SDA’s Great Disappointment Anniversary Edition

Is the Seventh-day Adventist Church Really the Remnant Church?

By Pastor Ronald V. Obidos II | Former Adventists Philippines Blog

“And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” — Revelation 12:17

The Big Question

We are the remnant, called to keep the commandments and the faith of Jesus.

The SDA Definition of the Remnant

Ayon sa Fundamental Belief #13 ng SDA:

“In the last days, a remnant has been called out to keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus... symbolized by the three angels of Revelation 14.”

  1. Commandment-keeping (lalo na ang Sabbath)

  2. The Spirit of Prophecy (na kay Ellen G. White)

Kaya ang formula nila ay ganito:

“Remnant = Sabbath Keepers + Ellen White’s Spirit of Prophecy.”

The Historical Claims Don’t Add Up

1. The Waldenses Were Not Sabbath-Keepers

Sabi ni Ellen White sa The Great Controversy:

“Through ages of darkness... the Waldenses kept the true Sabbath.” (GC 1911, p. 65)

“I found no allusion whatsoever to Sabbathkeeping among the Waldenses.”
(Endtime Issues, No. 87)

“We were never Sabbath keepers, but Reformed Protestants persecuted for our Calvinistic faith.”

At ‘yung salitang “insabbati”?

2. The “538–1798” Prophecy Period is Historically Baseless

Ayon sa The Great Controversy:

“The 1260 years of papal supremacy began in A.D. 538 and ended in 1798.

“Papal primacy began as early as the second century... not 538.”
(From Sabbath to Sunday)

In short, prophetic math, not historical fact.

The Exegetical Problem: Wrong Greek Word, Wrong Doctrine

Ang SDA claim:

“They keep the commandments of God” = They keep the Ten Commandments (including the Sabbath).

Pero sa Revelation 12:17, ang ginamit na word ay ἐντολή (entolē), hindi νόμος (nomos).

  • Kapag nomos = Mosaic Law

Pansinin:

“A new commandment (entolē) I give to you, that you love one another.” (John 13:34)

The “Testimony of Jesus” Is Not Ellen White

Revelation 19:10

“For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

Ang SDA interpretation: “Testimony of Jesus = Spirit of Prophecy = Ellen White.”

  • “testimony about Jesus,” o

  • “testimony from Jesus.”

Either way, wala itong kinalaman sa modern prophetess like Ellen G. White.

In short, the testimony of Jesus is the Gospel itself. Sabi nga ng New Living Translation:

“For the essence of prophecy is to give a clear witness for Jesus.”

That’s it. Wala nang mas malinaw pa.

Bible vs. Ellen White

BIBLE ELLEN WHITE
“In these last days, God has spoken to us through His Son.” (Hebrews 1:1–2) “In these days, He speaks to them by the testimonies of His Spirit.” (Testimonies, Vol. 5, p.147)

So, sino ang mas paniniwalaan mo?

The True “Remnant” Church

“My sheep hear My voice... and they follow Me.” (John 10:27)

Hindi sinabi, “they keep the seventh-day Sabbath.” Ang sabi Niya, “they follow Me.” The true remnant are those who rest not in a day, but in a Person: Jesus Christ.

Final Reflection

If you’re searching for “the true church,” wag kang maghanap ng “perfect” denomination. Human institutions will always have flaws. Hanapin mo ang mga taong totoo kay Cristo who love one another, preach the gospel of grace, and live under the law of Christ, not the shadow of Moses.

Doon mo makikita ang tunay na Remnant Church, the Body of Christ, scattered but sealed by the Spirit.

“The Lord knows those who are His.” 2 Timothy 2:19

Similarities Between Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Seventh-day Adventism on Salvation

When we place the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Seventh-day Adventist Church side by side, they seem vastly different. Roman Catholicism and Orthodoxy stand as ancient, liturgical, and sacramental traditions, while Seventh-day Adventism is a modern, revivalist offshoot of Protestantism. Yet when we examine their teaching on salvation, we discover surprising parallels. These similarities are not evident in their rituals, but rather in their approach to grace, faith, and works.

1. Salvation as a Process of Grace Plus Human Cooperation

Roman Catholic theology describes salvation as beginning with God’s grace but perfected through human cooperation. The Council of Trent declared: “If anyone says that the sinner is justified by faith alone…let him be anathema” (Council of Trent, Session VI, Canon IX). Grace is infused through the sacraments, and the believer must maintain this state by obedience.

Orthodoxy, while rejecting Trent’s categories, emphasizes theosis (union with God) as a lifelong process. According to Kallistos Ware: “For Orthodoxy, salvation is not a single event but a continuing process…a growth into likeness with God.”¹

Seventh-day Adventism mirrors this approach. While speaking of salvation by grace, Adventist soteriology insists on obedience to the Ten Commandments—especially Sabbath-keeping—as essential to final acceptance. Ellen White wrote: “All who prove their loyalty to God by observing His law, and refusing to accept a spurious Sabbath, will rank under the banner of the Lord God Jehovah.”*²

All three, therefore, diminish the sufficiency of Christ’s finished work by teaching that final salvation depends on human cooperation with grace.

2. Lack of Assurance

Roman Catholic theology warns against the certainty of salvation. The Catechism states: “No one can merit the initial grace of forgiveness and justification…final perseverance cannot be merited.”³ Orthodoxy similarly discourages assurance, stressing lifelong struggle and sacramental participation.

Adventism’s doctrine of the investigative judgment undermines assurance more radically: Christ is said to be reviewing believers’ lives to determine who is worthy of eternal life. Richard Rice, an Adventist theologian, admits: “This doctrine has caused more distress among Seventh-day Adventists than any other teaching.”

In all three systems, assurance is denied because salvation is viewed as conditional on human performance rather than the finished work of Christ.

3. Works as a Basis of Final Acceptance

Though grace is acknowledged, works function as conditions for salvation in each system. Catholic theology teaches that “good works performed in grace truly merit eternal life.”⁵ Orthodoxy stresses fasting, sacraments, and ascetic struggle. Adventism teaches that the final crisis will hinge on Sabbath observance. The common denominator: works become the basis of divine acceptance.

Biblical Response

In biblical perspective, in continuity with the Reformation, it offers a stark contrast:

  1. Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Christ Alone.

Ephesians 2:8–9 stands against every grace-plus-works system: “For by grace you have been saved through faith…not of works, lest anyone should boast.” Salvation is wholly the gift of God. Thomas Oden, a Reformed Arminian theologian, writes: “Justification is received through faith alone, not as a work but as the empty hand receiving God’s gift.”

  2. True Assurance in Christ.

Romans 8:1 declares: “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Assurance is grounded in Christ’s work, not human merit. While Reformed Arminians affirm conditional security (that one may fall away by unbelief), assurance is real and present for those who trust in Christ. John Wesley preached: “The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God.”

  3. Obedience as Fruit, Not Cause.

James 2 teaches that faith without works is dead, not that works save. Works are the evidence of salvation, never the ground of it. As Jacobus Arminius himself stated: “Good works are the fruits of faith…they follow faith as effects follow their causes.”⁸ The believer now lives under the “law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2), not the Old Covenant law, with gratitude, not legalism, as the motive.

Conclusion

Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Seventh-day Adventism all share a common flaw: salvation is presented as grace plus human performance. This robs Christ of His glory and leaves the believer without assurance. By contrast, the biblical gospel, understood from the Sola Scriptura perspective, proclaims that salvation is by grace alone, received by faith alone, in Christ alone. Works do not secure salvation but naturally flow from it.

In short:

  • Rome says: Grace plus sacraments plus works.

  • Orthodoxy says: Grace plus theosis through struggle and sacraments.

  • Adventism says: Grace plus law-keeping and Sabbath faithfulness.

  • The gospel says: Christ saves you fully—therefore live for Him.

“Bakit Nanatili pa ang Iba sa SDA church Kahit Alam na Nila ang Katotohanan?”

Introduction

At paano natin sila matutulungan?

Point 1: The Problem – Staying in Error

Romans 1:25“They exchanged the truth of God for a lie.”

  • Application: Knowledge of the truth is not enough; kailangan ng faith at courage to step out.

Point 2: The Root – Identity & Fear

Galatians 4:9“How is it that you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles?”

  • Identity:

Point 3: The Solution – Freedom in Christ

John 8:36“If the Son sets you free, you shall be free indeed.”

Conclusion

Paul’s Epistle to the Church of the Seventh-day Adventists

Imagine if Paul wrote a letter directly to the Adventist movement—what would he say? This fictional 'Epistle to the Adventists' is styled after Paul’s tone and theology, drawing from Galatians, Colossians, and Romans. It’s not Scripture, of course, but a pastoral-apologetic illustration meant to provoke reflection: how might Paul respond if the SDA framework existed in his time?

"Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, not sent by men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised Him from the dead.

To the saints who are called by the name of Christ yet are troubled by those who demand Sabbath-keeping and the works of the Law:

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins to deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father."

1. On Turning Back to Shadows

"I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the grace of Christ for another gospel—one that insists on days, foods, and Sabbaths as though Christ has not fulfilled them. Do you not know? These were but a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ." (Col. 2:16–17).

"If you insist on keeping the Sabbath as covenant law, are you not making void the cross of Christ? For Christ Himself is our rest, and in Him every day is holy." (Rom. 14:5–6).

2. On the Law and the Gospel

"O foolish Adventists! Who has bewitched you? Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law or by hearing with faith? The one who relies on the Sabbath or clean foods is bound to keep the whole Law (Gal. 3:10). But cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law."

"Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law by becoming a curse for us, that the blessing of Abraham might come to all nations through faith." (Gal. 3:13–14).

3. On Judging Other Believers

"Why do you pass judgment on your brother? For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, nor of Sabbaths and festivals, but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit." (Rom. 14:17).

"Let no one disqualify you by insisting on shadows. Hold fast to Christ, the Head, for in Him the fullness of God dwells bodily, and you have been made complete in Him." (Col. 2:9–10).

4. On Preaching a Different Gospel

"Even if I or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one you received—namely, that Christ saves by grace through faith apart from works of the Law—let him be accursed." (Gal. 1:8).

"For if righteousness were through the Sabbath or through the Law, then Christ died for no purpose." (Gal. 2:21).

5. On True Assurance

"Beloved, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Rom. 8:1). You are saved not by the covenant of Sinai, but by the blood of the New Covenant. For by grace you have been saved through faith. This is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast." (Eph. 2:8–9).

"Stand firm, then, in the freedom for which Christ has set you free. Do not submit again to a yoke of slavery."

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

Answer:

Oo, sasabihin nila, “We believe in salvation by grace through faith.”

O mas tama bang sabihin, “They are religious, sincere, moral… pero they still need to be reformed by the true gospel of grace”?

Ikaw, gusto mo ba ng Gospel na may dagdag kondisyon, o yung Gospel na talagang “It is finished” sa krus ni Cristo?

Evangelical Gospel vs. SDA Gospel

Kung titignan mo, parang may “plus” palagi sa SDA system.

Parang may fine print—yung parang contract na may nakasulat na “Terms and Conditions Apply.” 😅

A response to SDA’s weak apologetics that dismisses all churches as “equally corrupt.” [Taglish]

SDA palusot:

Kaya mo pa 'yan i-level up."

Sagot:

Oo, may corruption sa bawat church—walang nagde-deny niyan. Kahit sa New Testament, klaro 'yan. Diyan tayo nagkakasundo.

Oo.

Sabi ni Jesus: “A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit” (Matt. 7:18).

Why Former Adventists Shouldn’t Be Afraid to Join Other Evangelical Churches?

Leaving the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) system isn’t just a theological shift — it’s often an emotional and cultural one, too. Many former SDAs who have come to embrace the gospel of grace still find themselves hesitant to join other evangelical churches. There’s often fear, guilt, or confusion about what comes next.

But here’s the truth:

Fear of joining other gospel-preaching churches is often a leftover of Adventist legalism and pride — not from Christ.

Let’s talk about why you don’t have to be afraid, and how you can step into real, joyful fellowship with Christ-centered churches near you.

1. The Local SDA Church Is Not the True Church

In Adventism, you’re taught that your local church is part of the “remnant.” This creates a strong emotional loyalty — but biblically, the true Church is any gathering of believers united to Christ by faith (Ephesians 4:4–6).

Your identity is not in a denomination — it’s in Jesus.

2. Fear to Leave Is a Sign of Residual Legalism

If you’re hesitant to visit a Baptist, non-denominational, or Reformed church, that fear often comes from the SDA mindset of exclusivity.

But Scripture is clear:

“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”— 2 Corinthians 3:17

You’re not being disloyal to God by visiting other churches. You’re stepping into the freedom of the New Covenant, where Christ is your foundation — not a religious system.

3. Nothing to Worry About: Calvinism or Dispensationalism Isn’t the Enemy

Some former SDAs get anxious when they hear that a church is Calvinist (believes in eternal security or predestination) or dispensationalist (has a different view of end times). But here’s the good news:

These are not salvation issues.

As long as a church preaches salvation by grace through faith in Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8–9), and affirms the authority of Scripture, you're in good company.

Whether someone believes in once saved, always saved (OSAS), or has a different take on the rapture or the millennium — that’s not what saves them or disqualifies them.

What matters is this:
✔ You are saved by grace
✔ Through faith in Jesus
✔ Not by law-keeping
✔ And you now have eternal life and assurance (John 5:24)

Don’t let secondary doctrines steal your joy or freedom.

4. You’re Not Betraying God — You’re Trusting Him More

Walking into another church isn’t a betrayal. It’s obedience to the gospel. The SDA Church taught us that all other churches are Babylon. That was fear-based control.

Jesus didn’t call you to follow a denomination. He called you to follow Him.

5. How to Overcome the Fear

  • Pray for the Spirit’s leading.

  • Start with a gospel-preaching church near you.

  • Talk to the pastor about your background.

  • Be patient — it may feel different, but that’s okay.

  • Study Galatians to renew your mind about grace.

Final Thoughts

You are part of the true Church — the Body of Christ.

You’re free to worship with other believers, even if they don’t have the same views on the Sabbath, the end times, or predestination.

What unites us is the finished work of Christ — not the day we worship, the diet we follow, or the prophetic timeline we hold.

Jesus is enough.

So go ahead — find a local church where:

  • Christ is central

  • Grace is preached

  • The Bible is opened

  • And your soul can rest

No fear. No guilt. No more chains.

You are free.
You are loved.
You belong.

The Modern Indulgence? How Seventh-day Adventism Echoes Roman Catholic Legalism

Introduction:

One of the great cries of the Protestant Reformation was “salvation by grace through faith alone” (Ephesians 2:8–9). Martin Luther and the Reformers stood against the Roman Catholic Church’s sale of indulgences—promises of reduced punishment for sin in exchange for money or religious acts. These indulgences were more than corruption; they were a distortion of the gospel. What few realize today is that the core idea behind indulgences—salvation through performance—is alive and well in modern religious systems, including Seventh-day Adventism.

While SDAs don’t sell certificates to escape purgatory, they offer something similar: assurance of salvation based on law-keeping, particularly the Sabbath. This modern version of salvation by works subtly leads believers away from the sufficiency of Christ and back into bondage.

Let’s unpack the similarities.

1. Indulgences: Salvation Through Religious Acts

The Roman Catholic Church taught (and still teaches) that the merits of Christ and the saints can be applied to reduce punishment for sin through indulgences. This system:

  • Added human effort to Christ’s finished work

  • Required participation in Church-approved actions (pilgrimages, prayers, almsgiving)

  • Left people uncertain about their standing with God

Indulgences created a works-based pathway to grace, contrary to Scripture.

2. Adventism: Salvation Through Law-Keeping

Seventh-day Adventism officially teaches salvation by grace. But in practice, many SDAs believe:

  • Salvation is maintained by ongoing obedience to the Ten Commandments, especially the Sabbath

  • One’s eternal destiny depends on passing the Investigative Judgment

  • Those who worship on Sunday in the end-times will receive the Mark of the Beast

Just like indulgences, this creates a system of religious performance tied to salvation.

In the words of former Adventist and Christian theologian D.M. Canright (once a close associate of Ellen White):

"While claiming to preach salvation by grace, they hold that it is only for those who keep the law. They call that grace."

3. The Gospel Denied in Practice

The Apostle Paul faced similar distortions in the early church. In Galatians 3:1–3, he rebukes those who began in the Spirit but tried to be perfected by the flesh:

“Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?”

The same rebuke applies to both indulgences and Adventist legalism.

The SDA doctrine of the Investigative Judgment, where Christ allegedly began reviewing believers’ lives in 1844, places the believer’s assurance not in the cross, but in their record of law-keeping. This undermines the finished work of Christ and keeps members in fear.

Similarly, indulgences kept Catholics giving money, lighting candles, praying prayers—not out of love for God, but out of fear for their souls.

4. Both Systems Undermine Assurance

In both Catholicism and Adventism:

  • There is no true assurance of salvation

  • Believers are taught they may fall away or fail if they do not meet a certain standard

  • Jesus is Savior and Inspector

This is tragically opposed to the gospel that says:

“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1)

True peace with God comes not from our performance, but from Christ’s obedience alone (Romans 5:19).

5. Grace + Anything = Nothing

Any system that adds human effort to grace cancels grace. Paul makes this crystal clear:

“But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise, grace would no longer be grace.” (Romans 11:6)

That means:

  • Grace + Law = Law

  • Grace + Sabbath = Law

  • Grace + Investigative Judgment = Works

  • Grace + Indulgence = Condemnation

There is no room in the gospel for "Jesus did His part, now you must do yours." Jesus did everything.

Conclusion: From Shadows to Substance

Seventh-day Adventism clings to the shadow of the law, much like Roman Catholicism clings to rituals and sacraments. Both systems deny the believer full assurance and spiritual rest in Christ.

Paul said of the Sabbath and festivals:

“These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.” (Colossians 2:17)

Indulgences are no longer sold on street corners—but legalism is still sold from many pulpits. Adventism has repackaged the indulgence not with money, but with performance.

But the gospel invites us to a better way:

“Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

That’s not rest on a certain day.
That’s rest in a PersonJesus.
He alone is enough. No indulgence, no Sabbath, no system can replace the finished work of the cross.

Call to Action:

If you're tired of striving, if you're questioning whether you've done enough to be saved—you're not alone. And the truth is, you never could do enough. But Jesus did.

Come to Him. Rest in Him. Trust in Him.
Leave behind the modern indulgences of legalism and step into the freedom of the gospel.
