INVESTIGATING ADVENTISM Q&A: “Seventh‑Day Adventists ‘True Church’ Dilemma: Isang Legacy ng Panlilinlang!”

INVESTIGATING ADVENTISM Q&A: “Seventh‑Day Adventists ‘True Church’ Dilemma: Isang Legacy ng Panlilinlang!”

The "Invisible Church" vs. The Institution

Sabi nga ni Dr. Alister McGrath sa kanyang librong Christianity’s Dangerous Idea: The Protestant Revolution: A History from the Sixteenth Century to the Twenty‑First, p. 243:

"One of the most significant and distinctive Protestant beliefs concerns the nature of the church... The Protestant response to these entirely proper questions was to offer a new vision of what it meant to be a 'Christian church.' As we shall see, the new theory removed any necessity for institutional continuity with the medieval church.”

The "Fallacy" of Infallibility and Sincerity

"There is no excuse for anyone in taking the position that there is no more truth to be revealed and that all our expositions of Scripture are without an error... No true doctrine will lose anything by close investigation." (The Review and Herald, Dec 20, 1892)

The Deception: How SDA Handles the "Invisible Church"

"Seventh-day Adventists have never sought to equate their church with the church invisible... we do not believe that we alone constitute the true children of God."

Sabi ng talata: "And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold... there shall be one fold, and one shepherd." (KJV).

Bible Verse:

"But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: 'The Lord knows those who are his,' and, 'Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.'" 2 Timothy 2:19 (ESV)

"Debating My Former Self: Why Seventh-day Adventist Isn't the True Church?

Friday, October 24, 2025

Question:

Answer:

So let’s answer it real talk style, pero grounded sa Bible ha.

Question 1: Totoo ba yung claim ng bawat denomination na sila lang ang “One and Only True Church”?

“There is one body and one Spirit... one Lord, one faith, one baptism.”

Think of it like this: Kung si Jesus ang Head, at tayo ang Body (1 Cor. 12:12–13), then the true Church is composed of everyone truly connected to the Head, not everyone listed in a human registry.

Kasi kung ang kaligtasan ay depende sa membership, hindi sa relationship kay Cristo, then the thief on the cross wouldn’t have made it to paradise but Jesus Himself said, “Today, you will be with Me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43)

Bottom line:

The true Church isn’t defined by its name or registration, but by its union with Christ.

“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Walang nakasulat diyan na “and join our denomination.”

“Do not neglect meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing...”

Bakit?

Summary:

  • There is one true Church — the body of Christ, not a human denomination.

  • Salvation is by faith in Jesus alone, not by church membership.

  • But a true believer will always desire fellowship with God’s people, because we are saved into a community, not just out of the world.

FAP Q&A: "Pastor Ronald, what biblical basis or prophecy supports your claim to start a new church and call it 'the true church of God'?"

QUESTION:

"Pastor Ronald, what biblical basis or prophecy supports your claim to start a new church and call it 'the true church of God'?"

ANSWER:

Matthew 16:18 — “I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.”4

A true church is marked by:

* Right preaching of the Word (2 Tim. 4:2)

* Right administration of baptism and the Lord’s Supper (1 Cor. 11:23–26)

* Right practice of discipline and discipleship (Matt. 18:15–20)

Is There a Prophecy About Planting Churches?

Yes, hindi lang prophecy, kundi direct command!

Matthew 28:19-20 — “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations… teaching them to observe all that I commanded you.”

Acts 1:8 — “You will be my witnesses… to the ends of the earth.”

Every time a local church is planted, prophecy is being fulfilled:

Isaiah 49:6 — “I will make you a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”

So ang church planting ay hindi kapritso, kundi obedience sa Great Commission at part ng fulfillment ng prophecies about the gospel spreading to the nations.

Kung sa isang lugar walang church na nagpi-preach ng full gospel, planting a church is like lighting a lamp.

So paano tayo makakasiguro? Great Commission, then we are not building “our church” we are simply joining Christ in building His Church.

1 Corinthians 3:6–7 — “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth… neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.”

Kaya kapatid, ang tanong dapat: “Am I faithfully planting where Christ leads?” not “Am I starting the true church?” Because the “true” belongs to Christ alone.

Q&A on Church Planting and the “True Church”

Matthew 16:18 — “I will build My church.”

Ang tanong: Preaching ba nito ang tamang Ebanghelyo? Tama ba ang mga ordinances? May disiplina at discipleship ba? Kung oo, then it is a true church of God.

Matthew 28:19–20 — “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…”

Every church plant is part of Christ’s ongoing work of making disciples worldwide.

*Isaiah 49:6 — Salvation will reach the ends of the earth.

*Acts 1:8 — “You will be my witnesses… to the ends of the earth.”

Tuwing may itinatayong local church, prophecy is fulfilled kasi gospel light is spreading.

Romans 15:20 — “I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named.”

1 Corinthians 3:11 — “For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

Summary:

We don’t establish “the true church” in competition; we plant churches in obedience. The “true” belongs to Christ, and every faithful gathering under His Word and Spirit is already part of His one true Church.

How Has the Christian Church Continued Through History? From the Apostolic Fathers to Today — A Simple Breakdown

Have you ever wondered how we can be sure that the true Christian Church—the one that holds to the original teachings of Jesus and the apostles—has continued all the way to our time today?

It’s a really important question, especially since there are so many groups, denominations, and yes, false teachings out there. Some people think the real church got lost somewhere along the way, or that it had to be “restored” by someone much later. But the truth is this: God has always preserved His Church, even in the middle of chaos and corruption.

Here’s a simple breakdown of the timeline of the Christian Church, showing how God has faithfully kept His truth alive through real people in real history.

1. Apostolic Fathers (Around 70–150 AD)

These were leaders who personally knew the apostles or were discipled by those who did. Think of names like Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, and Polycarp (a student of the Apostle John!). These early believers helped guide the Church right after the New Testament was written.

They defended basic truths like:

  • The deity of Christ

  • The authority of the apostles

  • The importance of unity and love in the Church

Even though they didn’t write Scripture, their letters give us a peek into how the early Church functioned right after the apostles died.

2. Ante-Nicene Fathers (150–325 AD)

This was the period before the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. During this time, the Church faced two big challenges:

  1. Persecution from the Roman Empire

  2. Heresies from inside the Church, like Gnosticism (which taught secret knowledge and denied Jesus came in the flesh)

Church leaders like Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, and Tertullian stood up and defended the true gospel. They explained biblical doctrine clearly and helped keep the Church grounded in the truth.

3. Nicene & Post-Nicene Fathers (325–500 AD)

This period includes major church councils like:

  • Nicaea (325 AD) – affirmed that Jesus is fully God

  • Chalcedon (451 AD) – clarified that Jesus is both fully God and fully man

Leaders like Athanasius, Augustine, John Chrysostom, and Jerome shaped much of how Christians understood Scripture and theology. They fought hard to keep the Church from going off course.

This was a time of deep theological reflection and strong defenses of the faith.

4. Medieval Church (500–1500 AD)

This was the age of cathedrals, monks, and sadly, a lot of corruption. The Roman Catholic Church gained huge political and religious power. Many teachings during this time drifted away from the Bible, like:

  • The idea that the Pope is infallible

  • The use of indulgences to “buy” forgiveness

  • Salvation through works and sacraments

But not everyone went along with these errors. Groups like the Waldensians, and people like John Wycliffe and Jan Hus, stayed faithful to Scripture. They laid the groundwork for what would come next…

5. The Reformation (1500s)

This is the era of Martin Luther, John Calvin, Ulrich Zwingli, and others who stood up to say, “We must return to the Bible!”

Key teachings from this period:

  • Sola Scriptura – the Bible alone is our highest authority

  • Sola Fide – we are justified by faith alone, not by works

  • Sola Gratia – salvation is by grace alone

  • Solus Christus – Christ alone is our Savior

  • Soli Deo Gloria – all glory belongs to God

The Reformers didn’t invent a new religion. They were recovering the original faith of the apostles.

6. Post-Reformation to Modern Church (1600s–Today)

Since the Reformation, the Church has continued to grow across the world. Yes, many denominations have formed, and not all of them teach biblical truth. But many churches remain faithful to the core teachings of the gospel.

Throughout history, there has always been a remnant—people who love Jesus, trust His Word, and preach salvation by grace through faith.

And today, if you’re in a church that preaches the gospel, teaches the Bible faithfully, and lives under Christ’s Lordship, you are part of that unbroken chain of believers that goes all the way back to the time of the apostles.

So Where Is the “True Church” Today?

The true Church has never been defined by one name, building, or denomination. It’s made up of all those—across history and around the world—who trust in Jesus alone for salvation and hold fast to His Word.

Just like Jesus promised:

“I will build My church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” — Matthew 16:18

Despite false teachings, persecutions, and divisions, God has preserved His truth—and He still is, even now.

Let’s stay grounded in truth and continue the legacy of those who went before us.

WHAT IS THE TRUE CHURCH?

The true church transcends any identifiable denomination or religious institution; instead, it comprises individual believers who genuinely believe in Christ, engaging in daily worship of God in "spirit and truth" (John 4:24, Acts 2:46). According to biblical teachings, these true believers can be discovered across diverse churches, denominations, and religions worldwide, with only God having knowledge of their true identity (2 Tim. 2:19).

These individuals are recognized as "the church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven" (Heb. 12:23). The true church is constituted by people whose salvation is guaranteed, for their names were recorded in the "book of life" before the beginning of the world (Apoc. 3:5; 17:8). God, by His grace and foreknowledge, has chosen them based on their faith in Christ. The true church has already experienced salvation and justification from God due to their faith in the gospel or in Christ (Romans 10:17) before affiliating with any religious denomination or local church for their spiritual development (Acts 2:46, 47). The true church is distinguishable not by adherence to the 28 Fundamental Beliefs or participation in Daniel and Revelation Seminars but solely by the gospel about Christ and His redemptive sacrifice on the cross, freeing us from the bondage of sin (John 14:6; Romans 10:9-10; 1 Cor. 15:1-5). This gospel is proclaimed as "the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes" (Romans 1:16).

The “Visible” and the “Invisible” Church

An Adventist friend asked me about the true Church. He wanted to know where exactly can we find it today. Here is the sequence of his questions and my response.

1. Is the invisible church built by Christ in the 1st century different from the visible church?

2. Which of the two did the apostles belong to?

3. Which of these two is the true church of Christ?

4. Which of these two should we look out to join as members?

To begin, let's elucidate the concepts of the "visible church" and the "invisible church." These terms are eloquently and simply explained in the book Christian Beliefs: Twenty Basics Every Christian Should Know.

"The invisible Yet Visible Church"

Because we cannot see the spiritual condition of people’s hearts, the true church, in its spiritual reality as the fellowship of all genuine believers, is invisible. Only God can see the condition of people’s hearts. As Paul says in 2 Timothy 2:19, “The Lord knows those who are his.” Therefore, the “invisible church” is the church as God sees it.

But the church is also visible. While the invisible church is the church as God sees it, the “visible church” is the church as Christians on earth see it. Therefore, the visible church will contain genuine believers as well as others who do not truly believe or follow the claims of Jesus. But in making this distinction, we should not become overly suspicious regarding the status of those who appear to be true believers. Instead, with benevolent judgment, we should consider all to be members of the universal church who appear to be believers from their confession of faith and their pattern of life."

Hence, genuine believers are referred to as the "invisible church," chosen by the grace of God (Romans 11:5-6). This constitutes the authentic "true church," comprising only of "genuine believers," free from any pretense among its members. They are termed "invisible" because only God can discern their true identity, as He alone can discern the human heart and distinguish between the authentic and the insincere.

In contrast, the local churches we witness in various locations where believers gather for worship are labeled as "visible churches." These visible or local churches cannot be considered the "true church" as a collective entity since they consist of a mix of sincere and insincere believers. Even if all church buildings worldwide were to be destroyed, the faithful followers of Christ would remain devoted wherever they are, embodying the essence of the "church" (Greek: ekklesia, meaning "called-out ones"). The "visible church" represents an imperfect expression or manifestation of the "true church," which is the flawless "invisible church."

Certainly, when we attend any church, it's important to recognize that individuals belonging to the "invisible church" are not physically invisible. Rather, they are described as "invisible" because we cannot definitively determine who truly are sincere believers; only God possesses that knowledge.

Adventists acknowledge the two dimensions of the church, namely the "visible" and "invisible" church, as outlined in their SDA 28 Fundamental Beliefs book on page 171:

“2. The invisible church. The invisible church, also called the church universal, is composed of all of God’s people throughout the world. It includes the believers within the visible church and many who, though they do not belong to a church organization, have followed all the light Christ has given them (John 1:9). This latter group includes those who have never had the opportunity to learn the truth about Jesus Christ but who have responded to the Holy Spirit and “by nature do the things contained in the law” of God (Rom. 2:14).

The existence of the invisible church reveals that worship of God is, in the highest sense, spiritual. "The true worshipers," Jesus said, "will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him" (John 4:23). Because of the spiritual nature of true worship, human beings cannot calculate precisely who is and who is not a part of God's church.”

Now that we have a clear understanding of the concepts of the "invisible" and "visible" church, let's revisit the inquiries posed by my Adventist friend.

Is the invisible church built by Christ in the 1st century different from the visible church?

The clarification is that these are not distinct or separate churches; rather, it is one unified church. This unity is emphasized by the singular head of the church, as stated in Colossians 1:18. While the terms "visible" and "invisible" church may not be explicitly mentioned in the Bible, the concept stems from a sound comprehension of the Church doctrine. An illustrative instance can be found in the Bible, specifically in John chapter 4, where Jesus engages in a conversation with a Samaritan woman.

In John 4:20, the woman told Jesus,

John 4:20 (ESV) “Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.”

The Samaritan woman is discussing the "visible church" located in Jerusalem, where the Jews worship God. In response, Jesus asserts that the "true church" or genuine worshipers of God are not confined to Jerusalem. At this juncture, Jesus is alluding to the concept of the "invisible church":

John 4:23 (ESV) “But the hour is coming and is now here when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Among the 12 apostles of Jesus, both the "visible" and "invisible" aspects of the church are evident. The "visible church" comprises all 12 apostles, but in the "invisible church," only 11 apostles truly believe in Jesus, as Jesus foresaw Judas' betrayal (John 6:64, 70-71).

Which of the two did the apostles belong to?

As previously discussed, if every member of the 12 apostles were authentic believers, betrayal of the Lord would not occur. Those who genuinely belong to the "invisible church," recognized by the Lord, are individuals about whom "Jesus knew from the beginning who does not believe" (John 6:64). To reiterate, 11 out of the 12 apostles are part of the "invisible church," while Judas, despite being part of the "visible church" as one of the 12 apostles, is not deemed a true believer according to Jesus himself.

Matthias took the place of Judas, as documented in Acts 1:25-26, thereby restoring the complete roster of the 12 apostles. Matthias is listed among the "twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb" upon which the foundation of the New Jerusalem is established (Revelation 21:14).

Which of these two is the true church of Christ?

Indeed, both the "visible church" and the "invisible church" constitute the "true church" as part of the "one body of Christ." The distinction lies in the two aspects of the church, but they are inseparable, and neither is inherently right or wrong. Membership in the "visible church" does not inherently confer membership in the "invisible church." On the other hand, if one is called by God to be part of the "invisible church," it often, though not universally, aligns with belonging to the "visible church." Consequently, the "visible" and "invisible" church represent two facets of the same body of Christ.

Which of these two should we look out to join as members?

Now, we have grasped the connection and distinction between the "visible" and "invisible" church. The invisible church comprises genuine believers who are saved by grace through faith in Christ, with their names already inscribed in the book of life (Revelation 3:5). On the contrary, the "visible church" includes both believers and unbelievers, and not all members of this visible assembly are listed in the "book of life from the foundation of the world" (Revelation 17:8).

In response to the question, "to which of the two should we belong?" it becomes evident that, through God's grace, our inclusion should be in the "invisible church," established by God through our justification by faith. Simultaneously, we should also be part of the "visible church," established by God for the purposes of sanctification and spiritual growth.

The emergence of the "invisible church" or the "true church" is not contingent on mastering the SDA's 28 Fundamental Beliefs or adhering to a specific set of creeds or doctrines of any religion. Instead, it stems from God's calling, achieved through hearing and believing in the gospel of Christ (Romans 10:13-17).
