"Breaking the Adventist Two Laws Myth!"

A lot of folks often ask me: 'Pastor, why do you keep bringing up the Sabbath and the Law?'

That's a fair question! At Former Adventists Philippines, we've covered this topic tons of times in our podcasts, Bible studies, and fellowship groups. But here’s the thing: it keeps coming up as a huge issue. For many people transitioning out of Adventism, this isn't just about theology; it's deeply personal and emotional.

When you grow up Adventist, from Sabbath School as a kid all the way to Pathfinder campouts, you're conditioned to believe that keeping the Sabbath is the ultimate test of true faith. So when you start seeing the light of the New Covenant, every single question about the Sabbath triggers a domino effect. Answer one, and another fear or doubt pops right up.

We want to be super clear: if some brothers and sisters want to rest or worship on Saturdays because they want to set aside a day for God, there is nothing wrong with that. As the Apostle Paul says in Romans 14:5, everyone is free to hold their own convictions about special days.

"In the same way, some think one day is more holy than another day, while others think every day is alike. You should each be fully convinced that whichever day you choose is acceptable." Romans 14:5(NLT)

The real issue starts when keeping the Sabbath is turned into a requirement for salvation, or when it's used as a measuring stick to say, 'We're the only Remnant Church with the Seal of God, and Sunday worshippers have the Mark of the Beast.' That’s where we run into a major problem with the true Gospel.

If you're seeking real freedom in Christ, we need to break down the core foundation of this mindset: the 'Two Laws Theory.'

The SDA Blueprint: The 'Two Laws' Distinction

If you’ve done Bible studies with SDAs or watched their prophecy seminars, you're probably familiar with this teaching. Ellen G. White, the prophetess of the SDA Church, wrote over 200 times about two supposed distinct laws: the Moral Law and the Ceremonial Law.

In their official handbook, Principles of Life, there’s an entire chapter titled 'The Two Laws.' They even use a famous two-column chart to draw the line:

The constant pitch is: 'The law nailed to the cross was just the Law of Moses (Ceremonial Law), but the Ten Commandments (Moral Law) are still binding forever.'

But if we’re being honest with Scripture: Is this two-law split actually in the Bible?

Spoiler alert: Nope. There isn't a single verse in the Old or New Testament that teaches this kind of division.

What the Bible Actually Says: Just One Law

When you read the Bible without Adventist doctrinal lenses, you see that the whole legal system given to Israel, moral rules, civil laws, family guidelines, and ceremonial rituals, is called by one single collective term: 'The Law' (Torah).

Look at how Scripture itself describes it:

- Exodus 12:49 – 'There shall be one law for the native and for the stranger...'
- Numbers 15:16 – 'One law and one rule shall be for you and for the stranger...'
- Deuteronomy 1:5 – 'Beyond the Jordan... Moses undertook to explain this law (singular)...'

When Moses repeated all the commandments before entering Canaan in Deuteronomy, he included the Ten Commandments in Chapter 5 along with over 20 chapters of civil and ceremonial laws. Yet at the end, Moses still called the whole package 'this one law.' He never said, 'Here are two separate laws you need to keep.'

'Law of Moses' vs. 'Law of God': Are They Really Different?

A favorite line from Sabbatarian apologists is: 'The Law of God is different from the Law of Moses.' But in reality, the Bible uses these two phrases interchangeably!

Check out how Scripture merges them together:

- Nehemiah 8:1 – They told Ezra to bring 'the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded to Israel.'

- Ezra 7:6 – 'Ezra was skilled in 'the Law of Moses, which the Lord, the God of Israel, had given.'
- 2 Chronicles 31:3 – '...as it is written in the Law of the Lord, and in the Law of Moses.'

Even in the New Testament, when Mary and Joseph brought baby Jesus to the Temple in Luke 2:22–24, 39, they did everything 'according to the Law of Moses' (for purification) and 'according to the Law of the Lord' (sacrificing two birds). Which part belonged to Moses and which to God? Both! There's no hierarchy. The Law of Moses is the Law of God because God commanded Moses to write it down.

Double Standards in SDA Hermeneutics

There's a huge inconsistency in how SDA theology handles the Bible:

1. When dealing with Prophecy (like Daniel 7:25 or Isaiah 24:5), whenever they see the words 'law' or 'statutes,' they quickly claim: 'See? That's the Ten Commandments! The Papacy changed the Sabbath!'

2. But when they hit Paul's letters (like Ephesians 2:15 or Colossians 2:14) where Paul says Christ 'abolished' or 'set aside the law with its commands and regulations,' they suddenly pivot and say: 'Oh, that doesn't include the Ten Commandments! That's just the ceremonial law!'

That's called convenient interpretation, switching definitions whenever it fits the doctrine.

Praise God, even Malachi 4:4 clears this up: 'Remember the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel.' The Lord Himself confirms that Moses' law came directly from Him.

Beyond Stone: The True Moral Standard in the New Covenant

Many people assume the Ten Commandments written on stone are the highest or most complete moral standard. But in New Covenant Theology (NCT), we recognize that the Decalogue was part of a specific contract (the Old Covenant) given strictly to national Israel.

In fact, there are commands in the Old Testament with even deeper moral weight than what's explicitly stated in the Ten Commandments:

- Leviticus 19:18 – 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' (This is in Leviticus, what they call the 'ceremonial law'!)

- Deuteronomy 6:5 – 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart...'

- Exodus 22:22 – 'Do not mistreat the widow or the fatherless.'

- James 2:2–9 – Showing favoritism to the rich over the poor is called breaking the 'Royal Law' by James. It's not in the Ten Commandments, but it's still a binding moral command!

When Jesus gave the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7), He didn't just repeat the Ten Commandments; He raised the bar: 'You have heard that it was said... But I tell you...' Anger in your heart is murder. Lust in your mind is adultery. Jesus showed that the entire Law points to Him. He is the fulfillment of all its moral essence and shadow!

The Heart of the New Covenant: Jesus is Our Rest

For many former Adventists, stepping away brings heavy family tension. Relatives might say, 'Are you turning your back on God by leaving the Law?'

But friend, walking away from the Old Covenant Law doesn't mean becoming lawless or living in sin. We are no longer under the old law written on stone tablets (2 Corinthians 3:6–11). We are under the Law of Christ (Galatians 6:2; 1 Corinthians 9:21). Under the New Covenant, the Holy Spirit Himself writes His law directly on our hearts (Jeremiah 31:33).

What is the core standard for a New Covenant believer?

1. Faith in Jesus Christ as Savior.
2. Loving one another just as Christ loved us (1 John 3:23; Romans 13:8–10).

When Paul wrote in Romans 10:4 that 'Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes,' it means Jesus perfectly fulfilled every requirement of the Law, moral, civil, and ceremonial.

And as Hebrews 10:9 puts it: 'He sets aside the first to establish the second.'

True Sabbath in the New Covenant isn't a day on the calendar anymore (whether Saturday or Sunday). True Sabbath is a Person, Jesus Christ Himself! He invites us in Matthew 11:28: 'Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.'

If you want to worship on Saturday, do it freely in Christ! But don't ever think that day makes you righteous before God. Your righteousness, salvation, and rest depend solely on what Jesus accomplished at the cross. You are free in Christ, friend. Live in the true grace and freedom of the New Covenant!

Answer:

In short:

🔹 Same Solas, different nuances.
🔹 Same Savior, different system of grace

Reformed Arminian vs. Reformed Calvinist sa 5 Solas

1. Sola Scriptura – “Scripture Alone”

  • Calvinist: Scripture is ang absolute standard, period.

3. Sola Gratia – “Grace Alone”

5. Soli Deo Gloria – “To God Alone Be the Glory”

Quick Summary Table

Sola Reformed Calvinist Reformed Arminian
Sola Scriptura Bible as final authority Same – Christ-centered reading
Sola Fide Faith is a gift only to the elect Faith as a grace-enabled response
Sola Gratia Irresistible grace Prevenient (enabling) grace
Solus Christus Limited atonement Universal atonement (conditional)
Soli Deo Gloria Glory to God for monergism Glory to God for synergistic grace

Bottom line:

Question:

Answer:

Ellen G. White, though she never used the exact words “6,000 years and Jesus will come,” clearly taught and implied that the plan of redemption would close at the end of about 6,000 years of human history. Many of her contemporaries, including Uriah Smith, J.N. Andrews, and early SDA pioneers, believed we were nearing the “end of 6,000 years” in the 19th century, meaning Christ should’ve returned by now.

Fast forward: we’re now way past the 6,000-year mark, even conservative biblical chronologies (like Ussher’s) place Creation around 4004 B.C., which means the world hit 6,000 years over 20 years ago. Yet life continues, and Jesus hasn’t returned.

So what does that mean? Simple: Ellen White’s timeline-based prophetic expectation failed. If her “6,000-year close of probation” idea were truly divinely inspired, it should’ve matched reality. Instead, time exposed it as another human speculation.

The truth is, Jesus Himself said, “No one knows the day nor the hour” (Matthew 24:36). The apostles never tied Christ’s return to a 6,000-year countdown; that idea came from medieval Jewish and early millennial traditions, not Scripture.

So to answer plainly:

Ellen White’s 6,000-year prediction is not biblical prophecy; it’s a failed human assumption wrapped in prophetic language.

Ang totoo, the Lord’s timing is not measured by man’s calculations (2 Peter 3:8–9).

Question:

Answer:

“By one offering He has PERFECTED FOREVER those who are being sanctified.” Hebrews 10:14

Take note: perfected forever.

Ang prinsipyo namin: “once in Christ, remain in Christ.”

“If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” 1 John 2:1

“Absent from the body, present with the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 5:8
“There is now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1

Walang condemnation. Walang purgatory.

“The grace of God has appeared… teaching us to deny ungodliness.” Titus 2:11–12

“Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.” Romans 4:8

“Our God is a consuming fire.” Hebrews 12:29

Conclusion: Wala Nang Dapat Idagdag sa Krus

Ang sinabi Niya: “It is finished.”

Bilang Reformed Arminians, pinaninindigan namin:

Walang halfway grace.

(Homily 28 on 2 Corinthians)

(Psalm 37:3; City of God 21.26)

Tertullian (A.D. 160–225): Tradisyon ng Paggunita, Hindi Purgatory

Origen (A.D. 185–254): Pinagmulan ng Error

Gregory the Great (A.D. 540–604): Dito Nagsimula ang Purgatory Doctrine

Si Gregory the Great ang unang nag-institutionalize ng purgatory.

Sabi niya:

(Dialogues 4:39)

Reformed Arminian Summary

  • Justification. Declared righteous once for all dahil sa ginawa ni Cristo (Romans 5:1).

Biblical + Historical Harmony

Judgment“It is appointed once to die, then judgment” (Heb. 9:27)Universally acceptedPurgatory delay before judgment

Answer:

Call to Action:

Answer:

Ayos ‘tong tanong mo, kasi ito talaga yung pinakapuso ng usapin ng Law and the Gospel. Maraming nalilito dito akala ng iba, “under the law” means curse lang, pero hindi ganun kasimple. So tara, himay-himayin natin.

Una, ano ba talaga ibig sabihin ng “under the law”?

Sabi ni Paul sa Romans 6:14, “You are not under the law but under grace.” Yung phrase na “under the law” (Greek: hupo nomon) hindi lang ibig sabihin under curse.

“God sent His Son, born under the law, to redeem those under the law…”

Klaruhin natin:

Sabi nga ni Paul sa 2 Cor. 3:7, “the ministry of death written on tablets of stone.”

Hindi na tayo sumusunod “under the law of Moses,” kundi “under the law of Christ” (1 Cor. 9:21).

Simplified Comparison

View Meaning Covenant
Under the Law Nabubuhay ka sa ilalim ng Mosaic Law Old Covenant
Under Grace Nabubuhay ka sa ilalim ng biyaya, led by the Spirit New Covenant

Sabi ni Paul sa Galatians 5:18,

“If you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.”

Summary ng Buong Sagot:

🔸 “Under the law” = under the whole covenant system of Moses.
🔸 Christ didn’t just free us from the curse — He freed us from the covenant itself.
🔸 We now live under grace, by the Spirit, fulfilling the law of Christ through love.

Question:

Answer:

So let’s answer it real talk style, pero grounded sa Bible ha.

Question 1: Totoo ba yung claim ng bawat denomination na sila lang ang “One and Only True Church”?

“There is one body and one Spirit... one Lord, one faith, one baptism.”

Think of it like this: Kung si Jesus ang Head, at tayo ang Body (1 Cor. 12:12–13), then the true Church is composed of everyone truly connected to the Head, not everyone listed in a human registry.

Kasi kung ang kaligtasan ay depende sa membership, hindi sa relationship kay Cristo, then the thief on the cross wouldn’t have made it to paradise but Jesus Himself said, “Today, you will be with Me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43)

Bottom line:

The true Church isn’t defined by its name or registration, but by its union with Christ.

“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Walang nakasulat diyan na “and join our denomination.”

“Do not neglect meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing...”

Bakit?

Summary:

  • There is one true Church — the body of Christ, not a human denomination.

  • Salvation is by faith in Jesus alone, not by church membership.

  • But a true believer will always desire fellowship with God’s people, because we are saved into a community, not just out of the world.

  • Kumbaga: Second Coming → 1,000-year kingdom → Final Judgment.

2. Amillennialism

  • Ang “A-” ay ibig sabihin “no literal millennium.”

  • Ang focus: Christ conquers the world through the Gospel, not by force, but by grace and truth.

Biblical foundation

  • Matthew 28:18–20 — “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me… make disciples of all nations.”

  • Psalm 22:27 — “All the ends of the world shall remember and turn to the LORD.”

  • Habakkuk 2:14 — “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.”

Ito ang vision ng Postmillennialism:

The Gospel will not fail. The Church will grow, reform, and influence cultures until Christ returns in final victory.

4. Historic Premillennialism

  1. Because it fits New Covenant Theology — Christ has already conquered sin, death, and Satan (Colossians 2:15).

  2. Because it fuels Gospel optimism — hindi tayo naghihintay lang ng pagwasak ng mundo, kundi nagtatrabaho para sa renewal ng mundo sa ilalim ng lordship ni Christ.

  3. Because it aligns with Scripture’s flow — mula Genesis to Revelation, lagi nating nakikita ang progressive victory of God’s Kingdom (Daniel 2:35, Matthew 13:31–33).

  4. Because it honors the Great Commission — Hindi “escape plan” ang Christian life; it’s kingdom expansion.

Conclusion

So, simple lang:
Postmillennialism sees the future not as doom, but as destiny, the triumph of Christ through His Church.

"Before and After Grace": SDA church lang daw ang mapupuntahang tunay?

“Yes, that was the old me, and that proves grace works.
From blindness to boldness, from deception to redemption.
This is not a scandal, it’s salvation.”

Let’s Be Real: Logical Check

Si Saul of Tarsus

Naalala mo si Saul of Tarsus?

Christ alone saves not a church name, not a prophetess, not a Sabbath law.

Pastoral Heart

Let’s break it down:

After Darby, dinala ni C.I.

24:21) ay already fulfilled in the destruction of Jerusalem (AD 70), isang event na nag-end ng Old Covenant age.

In short:

The 7-year tribulation theory originated around the 1830s–1840s, not in the 1st century. It’s a Darby-era innovation, later popularized by Scofield and modern prophecy teachers.

Biblical takeaway:

Ang tunay na focus ng eschatology ay hindi “when will the tribulation start?” kundi “are you living faithfully in the Kingdom now?” Kasi sabi ni Jesus sa John 16:33:

“In this world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Answer:

To be honest, isa ito sa mga pinaka-heartbreaking pero theologically rich questions sa buong Christian faith. Let’s talk about it nang malinaw at may puso.

“All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

3. Biblical clues tell us God receives infants into His mercy.

“Now he is dead. Why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.”

Kaya malinaw, David believed his infant was with the Lord.

“Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”

Comfort Verse:

“He will tend His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs in His arms and carry them close to His heart.” – Isaiah 40:11

Bottom Line:

Answer:

Tandaan mo ‘to sa Matthew 7:22–23:

So, bottom line?

Question:

Answer:

Good question and honestly, isa ito sa mga pinaka–madalas na tanong pagdating sa theology at evangelism. Ganito ‘yan.

Kaya habang may oras pa, huwag tayong kampante.

“The question is not what happens to those who haven’t heard the Gospel the question is, what are we doing about it?”

Question: "Pastor Ronald, totoo po ba na binago ng Katoliko ang Matthew 28:19–20 mula 'in Jesus' name' tungo sa 'Father, Son, and Holy Spirit'?"

Answer:

The Claim vs. The Facts

Claim:

"Yung part na ‘baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit’ daw ay dagdag lang ng Katoliko.

Lahat ng extant manuscripts mula sa 2nd century hanggang sa modern copies ay naglalaman ng “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Kung idadagdag mo ’yan sa isang text na sinulat ni Matthew (1st century), kailangan mo ring patunayan na lahat ng kopya sa buong mundo ay nabago which is historically impossible before printing existed.

What the Early Church Said

Even before the so-called “Catholic Church” of Rome became powerful (3rd–4th century), the earliest church fathers already quoted Matthew 28:19 in full Trinitarian form.

Examples:

  • Didache (AD 70–100) — the earliest Christian teaching manual, contemporary with the apostles:

“Baptize in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Didache 7:1–3)

  • Tertullian (AD 200) —

“The law of baptism has been imposed and its formula prescribed: ‘Go, teach the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.’” (Against Praxeas, 26)

  • Hippolytus (AD 215) —

“When he who is to be baptized goes down into the water… he is baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” (Apostolic Tradition, 21)

The only people who question it today are those who deny the Trinity kaya natural lang na gusto nilang burahin ’yung verse na nagpapakita ng Trinitarian pattern.

The Theological Coherence

Kapag sinabi ni Jesus “in the name,” notice singular form siya not “names.” Ibig sabihin, iisa ang pangalan, pero tatlong Persona: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It fits perfectly with the Trinity, not with any oneness or modalist system. And if babasahin mo ang buong context ng Matthew 28:18–20, ang emphasis ay sa divine authority ni Jesus (“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me”) na Siya ring nag-uutos in the name of the Triune God, the very same God who revealed Himself in three Persons.

“In Jesus’ Name” in Acts, Not a Contradiction

Ngayon baka tanungin mo:

“Eh bakit sa Acts, puro in the name of Jesus lang?”

The apostles obeyed it, not contradicted it.

Summary

Issue SDA/Anti-Trinitarian Claim Biblical & Historical Fact
“Dagdag ng Katoliko” No ancient evidence. All manuscripts & early fathers quote the full verse.
“Acts says in Jesus’ name only.” Supposed contradiction. “In Jesus’ name” = by His authority, not a formula.
“The Trinitarian formula was invented later.” 4th-century invention. Found in Didache (1st century) and early Christian writings.

Parang ganito: Kung sinabi ng teacher mo, “Write your paper in my name,” hindi ibig sabihin literal mong isusulat yung name niya sa title. It means with my authority, representing me, and that’s what baptism in the name of Jesus means.

Pero kapag sinabi ni Jesus na “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”, He’s revealing the divine relationship of the Godhead, the full revelation of who God truly is under the New Covenant.

Pastoral Reflection

The Trinity isn’t a contradiction it’s a revelation.

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.”
