White’s visions at face value. However, as believers called to test all things against Scripture and basic reality, we need to inspect these claims carefully.
One of the most intriguing, and problematic, episodes in early Adventist history is Mrs. White’s 1846 vision of the solar system. Here is a candid Q&A breakdown examining what happened, what modern science reveals, and what this tells us about the true origin of her "revelations."
Q1: What exactly did Ellen G. White claim to see in her 1846 vision of the planets?
In late 1846, nineteen-year-old Ellen White went into a vision during a meeting in Topsham, Maine. According to eyewitness accounts, she began describing the solar system, focusing on Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus.
Her contemporary, Mrs. Truesdail, recorded that Mrs. White counted the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, gave a beautiful description of Saturn's rings, and made a striking claim:
"Sister White was in very feeble health, and while prayers were offered in her behalf, the Spirit of God rested upon us. We soon noticed that she was insensible to earthly things. This was her first view of the planetary world. After counting aloud the moons of Jupiter, and soon after those of Saturn, she gave a beautiful description of the rings of the latter. She then said, 'The inhabitants are a tall, majestic people, so unlike the inhabitants of earth. Sin has never entered here.' According to Spalding, Enoch told her that Saturn was not his permanent home, but that he was merely visiting there while waiting for the Earth to be restored to its Edenic state.

- No Solid Surface: Neither Jupiter nor Saturn has solid ground to stand on. They are gas giants made almost entirely of hydrogen and helium. Far below their outer atmospheres lies an endless ocean of liquid hydrogen under unimaginable pressure.
- Crushing Atmospheric Pressure: The atmospheric pressure on these planets is millions of times greater than Earth’s. It is strong enough to crush heavy metals into oblivion. A human body, even a giant one or a translated Enoch, would be instantly pulverized.
- Lethal Environment: Jupiter is wrapped in intense radiation belts that would deliver a fatal dose within minutes. Meanwhile, the median surface temperatures are devastatingly cold: roughly -145C(-234°F) on Jupiter and-139C (-218°F) on Saturn.
- Zero Evidence of Life: Spacecraft like Juno (which has been orbiting Jupiter since 2016) and Cassini-Huygens (which orbited Saturn for 13 years), alongside high-powered space telescopes, have swept these planets thoroughly. There are no plants, no animals, no cities, and certainly no tall, majestic human beings wandering around.

Instead, she saw only what any 19th-century American could read in a public library, an encyclopedia, or a popular science lecture, plus fictional details like giant alien people, likely borrowed from popular romantic literature of that era (such as Voltaire's Micromegas or Emanuel Swedenborg’s vision writings).

To understand why this vision happened, we have to look at the historical context of early 1846.
James and Ellen White were young, broke, and struggling to build credibility following the Great Disappointment of 1844. Many early Adventists were deeply skeptical of Ellen’s claims to prophetic visions.
Enter Joseph Bates, a retired sea captain, a respected leader, and a crucial financial prospective backer. Bates was a firm believer in the Sabbath, but he was openly skeptical of Ellen White’s visions. However, Bates had one well-known passion: Astronomy. He loved talking about the stars, navigation, and the Orion nebula.
In November 1846, Ellen conveniently went into a vision specifically about astronomy right in front of Captain Bates. As she began dramatically describing space, Bates was mesmerized. When she "counted" the exact number of moons he already knew from his navigational maps, Bates was completely sold, exclaiming, "This is of the Lord!"
This single vision won over Joseph Bates, securing his influence and support for the Whites. It served a tactical, organizational purpose, not a divine one.
