Tara Bible Study Tayo! Topic: Mark 16:15–16: Is Water Baptism Necessary for Salvation?

Pastor Ronald:
Okay, open your Bible to Mark 16:15–16. Can you read it for us?

Bible Student: Sure, Pastor. Sabi dito: "He said to them, 'Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.'"

Pastor Ronald: Thanks. So, ano yung tanong mo regarding this verse?

Bible Student: Pastor, medyo confusing kasi yung verse 16. Sabi, "Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved."

Pastor Ronald: That’s a classic question. And honestly, madaming nalilito diyan. Pero, let’s look closer at the text. Notice mo yung second half ng verse? Pakibasa ulit yung part about condemnation.

Bible Student: Sabi dito: "...but whoever does not believe will be condemned."

Pastor Ronald: Exactly. Pansinin mo yung difference?

Bible Student: Sinabi lang, "whoever does not believe." Hindi sinabing "whoever is not baptized."

Pastor Ronald: Tumpak! That is crucial context. Sa theology, we interpret Scripture with Scripture. We know that salvation is by grace through faith alone (Ephesians 2:8-9).

So bakit isinama pa ni Jesus yung "and is baptized" sa first part? Bakit hindi na lang "whoever believes will be saved"?

Pastor Ronald: Good point. We have to remember the context of the Early Church. Sa New Testament kasi, baptism was the immediate, public expression of faith. Walang concept noon na "secret believer." If you believe, you get baptized immediately—parang automatic response siya.

Isipin mo ito: Baptism is like the wedding ring.

It is the outward sign of an inward grace. Kasi nga, from a Reformed Arminian perspective, God’s grace enables us to believe, and when we respond in faith, we are justified. Baptism is our pledge of a good conscience towards God (1 Peter 3:21). It follows faith naturally.

Bible Student: So, Pastor, kung may tao na naniwala kay Jesus, tapos on the way sa baptism service, na-accident at namatay, ligtas siya?

Pastor Ronald: Absolutely. He is saved because of his faith in Christ. Remember the thief on the cross? Sabi ni Jesus, "Today you will be with me in Paradise."

It's a relationship based on the New Covenant. Under the New Covenant, ang law ni God ay nakasulat na sa puso natin. We obey, including the command to be baptized, not to be saved, but because we are saved.

Pero warning lang din: If someone says they believe pero ayaw magpa-baptize kahit kaya naman nila, that implies a problem with their obedience and submission to Christ's Lordship. Baptism isn't necessary for salvation, but it is necessary for obedience.

Bible Student: Malinaw, Pastor! So the command in verse 15 to "preach the gospel" is really inviting people to believe. Once they believe, we baptize them as a mark of their new life.

Pastor Ronald: Amen. Kaya tara, let's go and share the Gospel!

Real Talk Reflection

"Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned." — Mark 16:16

Do not confuse the fruit with the root. Faith in Christ is the root of salvation; baptism is the beautiful fruit of obedience. Don't rely on the ritual; rely on the Savior. But if you truly rely on the Savior, do not delay the ritual He commanded.

Action Point: Have you publicly declared your faith through water baptism? If not, schedule a talk with your church leader today. If you have, share your baptism testimony with a friend this week to encourage them!
