Once Saved Always Saved? A Conditional Eternal Security Perspective

From a Reformed Arminian perspective, Grace New Covenant Community (Former Adventists Philippines) affirms conditional eternal security. This conviction is not about earning salvation through works, but about persevering in a living, abiding relationship with Christ. The following 16 points are best understood as a pastoral guide, a way of nurturing believers to remain steadfast in faith and communion with the Lord.

1. The Payment of Jesus (John 19:30)

Jesus didn't just make salvation "hypothetical." He fully paid the price for every sin. But think of it like a paid-for scholarship: it’s yours, fully funded, but you have to actually stay enrolled in the school (the faith) to keep the benefits.

2. Grace vs. Works (Ephesians 2:8-9)

The "determining factor" is still faith, which is a gift of grace. Faith is the hand that receives the gift. If you pull your hand away, you aren't "working" to lose it; you are simply refusing to receive it anymore.

3. Qualifying for Salvation

Nobody qualifies except Jesus! That’s why we stay in Him. Our security isn't in our own "holiness track record," but in our union with Christ. As long as we are in the Vine, we are safe.

4. The "Line" of Sin

It’s not a "sin count" that makes you lose salvation. The only "sin" that causes the loss of salvation is the sin of unbelief or apostasy—renouncing your trust in Jesus. Jesus covered all sins, but the benefit of that covering is applied through persistent faith.

5. Knowing if it's Lost

You don't "accidentally" lose salvation like your car keys. Apostasy is a heart-hardening process. If you are worried about losing your salvation, that's actually a sign you still have faith! People who have truly walked away usually don't care anymore.

6. Getting it Back (Galatians 3:1-3)

You don't get it back through "extra" good works. You get it back the same way you got it the first time: by repentance and faith. Like the Prodigal Son, you just come home to the Father who is already waiting.

7. Still a "Gift"

Yes, it is still a gift! If a friend gives you a car and you later give it back or abandon it, it was still a gift when you had it. God’s grace is always unmerited, even when we return after wandering.

8. Knowing it's Regained

The Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit. When you turn back to Christ and feel that peace and desire to follow Him again, that is the Spirit confirming you are His.

9. Assurance and "Knowing" (1 John 5:13)

Assurance is for the present. "I know whom I have believed." We have 100% confidence in Christ’s ability to save us today. We don't need to worry about "tomorrow's" failure if we are walking with Him now.

10. No Condemnation (Romans 8:1)

This promise is specifically for those who are "in Christ Jesus." The "no condemnation" is the reality of the environment of grace. As long as you remain in that environment (in Christ), there is zero condemnation.

11. "I Will Lose No One" (John 6:39)

God is powerful enough to keep everyone. He will never "drop" you or let a wolf snatch you away. However, He respects the freedom He gave you to walk away yourself. He won't lose you, but you can leave Him.

12. "Eternal" Life

"Eternal" describes the quality and source of the life (it's God's life). If you unplug a lamp, the electricity in the socket is still "eternal" and "constant," but the lamp no longer shines because it's disconnected.

13. "Unborn Again"

This is a metaphor. While we can't literally "un-happen" a birth, the Bible uses other metaphors like "shipwrecking" one's faith (1 Tim 1:19) or a branch being "cut off" from the vine (John 15:6).

14. The "Golden Chain" (Romans 8:30)

This describes God's corporate plan for His people. Those who, as a group, are called and justified will be glorified. It’s the "blueprint" for the Church. To benefit from the end of the chain, we must remain linked to Christ.

15. Kept by the Power of God (1 Peter 1:5)

Read the whole verse: we are "shielded by God’s power through faith." God’s power is the guard, but faith is the door. He does the keeping, but we do the trusting.

16. The "Permanent" Seal of the Spirit

It’s common to hear that the "seal" mentioned in Ephesians 1:13–14 is like an unbreakable padlock, but from a Reformed Arminian perspective, we see it differently. Here is how we respond to that:

  • The Seal is an "Earnest" (Down Payment): The Bible uses the word arrhabōn, which refers to a down payment or a pledge. While God’s "deposit" is 100% reliable, a down payment is a guarantee of a future transaction based on a covenant relationship. If a person chooses to walk away from the covenant and commit apostasy, they are essentially forfeiting the deposit and the inheritance it promised.

  • Sealed "For" the Day, Not "Until" Regardless: Ephesians 4:30 says we are sealed for (or unto) the day of redemption. This marks us as God’s property, like a king’s signet on a letter. However, this ownership is maintained through a living faith. Just as a seal on a scroll can be broken if the scroll is discarded, the seal of the Spirit is not a mechanical override of our will.

  • Warning Against Grieving the Spirit: If the seal were an unconditional, permanent lock that made loss of salvation impossible, the repeated warnings in Scripture against "grieving" (Eph 4:30), "quenching" (1 Thess 5:19), or even "insulting the Spirit of grace" (Heb 10:29) would lose their gravity. The seal identifies who we belong to right now as we walk by faith.

  • Security in the Sealer: Our security is absolute as long as we remain in Christ. The Spirit is indeed powerful enough to keep us sealed, and He will never break that seal from His end. But as believers with conditional security, we recognize that the "seal" is the mark of our current union with Him a union that we must not abandon through unbelief.

Real Talk Reflection

Bible Verse: "Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life." (Revelation 2:10)

Call to Action: Treat the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life as a precious, living relationship to be cherished, rather than a mechanical "stamp" on a document. Stay sensitive to His leading and keep your heart aligned with His through daily prayer.
