"Pagod, Punas, at Panata: Is This the Worship God Requires?"

Napapanahon ang tanong na ito dahil ngayon ay January 9, ang araw ng Traslacion. Ito ay isang sensitibo ngunit napakahalagang usapin pagdating sa teolohiya at kaligtasan.

Bilang isang "Real Talk" na pagsusuri base sa Bibliya, kailangan nating himayin ito sa dalawang aspeto: ang Sincerity (Sinseridad) at ang Truth (Katotohanan).

Narito ang paghimay kung paano malalaman kung "legit" o Biblikal ang pananampalataya.

1. Ang "Zeal Without Knowledge" (Romans 10:2)

Maraming deboto ang sincere. Makikita mo ang kanilang sakripisyo nakatapak, nagtutulakan, umiiyak, at handang masaktan para sa kanilang panata. Hindi natin matatawaran ang kanilang damdamin.

Pero sinabi ni Apostle Paul tungkol sa mga kababayan niyang Hudyo na masigasig sa relihiyon:

"Sapagkat mapapatotohanan kong sila'y masigasig sa Diyos, subalit ang kanilang sigasig ay hindi ayon sa kaalaman." (Roma 10:2)

Ibig sabihin, pwedeng maging sincere ang tao, pero sincere na mali. Ang "legit" na faith ay hindi lang basta "matinding damdamin"; ito ay dapat nakabase sa tamang kaalaman kung sino ang Diyos ayon sa Bibliya.

2. Ang Object of Faith: Kanino ka nakakapit?

Ang legitimacy ng faith ay nakadepende sa Object of Faith.

Fake/Misplaced Faith: Kung ang tiwala ay nasa rebulto, nasa panyo na ipinunas, o nasa panata (human effort) upang makuha ang favor ng Diyos. Ito ay nagiging idolatry o "works-based" salvation.

Legit Faith: Ang tiwala ay na kay Hesu-Kristo na Buhay, na nasa kanan ng Ama, at sa Kanyang "Finished Work" sa krus.

Sabi sa John 4:24, ang Diyos ay Espiritu, at ang mga sumasamba sa Kanya ay dapat sumamba sa Espiritu at Katotohanan. Ang Diyos ay hindi nililimitahan ng kahoy o imahen (Acts 17:29).

3. Ang Tatlong Sangkap ng Legit na Faith (Saving Faith)

Sa Reformed Theology, ang tunay na pananampalataya ay may tatlong elemento. Check mo ito kung pasado ang faith mo:

A. Notitia (Knowledge/Kaalaman)

Kilala mo ba ang tunay na Hesus ng Bibliya? O ang kilala mo lang ay ang "Hesus" ng tradisyon? Ang tunay na Hesus ay Tagapagligtas na sapat na ang ginawa sa Krus at hindi na kailangan tulungan ng ating mga ritwal.

B. Assensus (Agreement/Pagsang-ayon)

Naniniwala ka ba na totoo ang sinasabi ng Diyos tungkol sa iyong kasalanan at sa Kanyang biyaya? Hindi ito "blind faith." Ito ay conviction na ang Bibliya ay totoo.

C. Fiducia (Trust/Personal na Pagtitiwala)

Ito ang pinakamahalaga. Hindi lang ito paniniwala na "may Diyos." Ito ay ang pagsandal (resting) kay Kristo para sa iyong kaligtasan.

Test: Kung tatanungin ka, "Bakit ka tatanggapin sa langit?"

Sagot ng Fake Faith: "Kasi namanata ako," "Kasi sumama ako sa prusisyon," "Kasi mabait ako." (Self-righteousness)

Sagot ng Legit Faith: "Dahil kay Hesus at sa Kanyang ginawa para sa akin." (Christ-centered)

4. Ang Bunga: Transformation vs. Ritualism

Sabi sa James 2:17, ang pananampalatayang walang gawa ay patay. Pero ang "gawa" na tinutukoy dito ay bunga ng pagbabago, hindi ritwal.

Ang deboto ba ay nagbago ang ugali? Tumigil ba sa bisyo, naging tapat sa asawa, at naging maayos sa kapwa dahil binago siya ni Kristo?

O deboto lang tuwing January 9, pero sa ibang araw ay walang takot sa Diyos? Yan ay dead faith.

Conclusion:

Ang pagsama sa Traslacion, paghawak sa lubid, o pagpunas ng panyo ay hindi basehan ng kaligtasan at biblikal na pananampalataya. Sa katunayan, delikado ito dahil maaari nitong ilihis ang focus ng tao mula sa Creator papunta sa created image (Romans 1:25).

Ang Legit na Faith ay ang pagsuko ng buhay kay Hesus, pagtalikod sa kasalanan (repentance), at pagtitiwala na Siya lamang ang Daan, Katotohanan, at Buhay na hindi na kailangan ng "intermediary" na rebulto.

Nasaktan at Napagod: When Religious Devotion Becomes 'Pagkaing Napapanis'

Bukas, millions na naman ang dadagsa sa mga kalsada ng Maynila. Kitang-kita natin ang dedication walang pakialam sa init, siksikan, gutom, at sakit ng katawan, makahawak lang sa lubid o masulyapan ang poon. It is undeniably a breathtaking display of religious zeal. Did you know na sa Bible, may ganito ring scenario? A massive crowd exerted so much effort to follow Jesus, tumawid pa ng dagat, at hinanap Siya nang puspusan. But instead of commending their hard work, binigyan sila ni Jesus ng isang masakit na rebuke in John 6:27: "Huwag ninyong pagpaguran ang pagkaing napapanis..." This begs the tough question for us today: Ang debosyon ba natin ay para sa tunay na relasyon kay Kristo, o nagpapakahirap lang tayo para sa "blessings" na lumilipas?

Ang "Transactional Faith": Panata o Business Deal?

Sabi ni Jesus sa verse 26, diretsahan: “Hinahanap ninyo ako, hindi dahil sa nakita ninyo ang mga himala, kundi dahil nakakain kayo ng tinapay at nabusog.”

Aray ko po. This hits hard.

The crowd wasn't chasing holiness; they were chasing a "free lunch." Na-miss nila ang point. Ang tingin nila kay Jesus ay isang provider ng needs, hindi Lord ng kanilang buhay. Sa context natin ngayon, ito yung danger ng maling klase ng "Panata."

Nagiging transactional ang faith. We start thinking, "Lord, maglalakad ako nang nakapaa, makikipagbuno ako sa lubid, at magpapakahirap ako... basta pagalingin mo ang sakit ko," o kaya naman, "basta bigyan mo ako ng work sa abroad."

Sa mindset na ito, ang pagsasakripisyo natin ay nagiging "currency" o pambayad para makuha ang gusto natin sa Dios. We treat God like a vending machine: we insert our "suffering" and "effort," expecting Him to dispense our "wishes."

Pero mga kapatid, let’s be real. God is not obligated to bless us just because we physically struggled. Ang tunay na pananampalataya ay hindi negosyo. We don't follow Jesus for the loaves and fishes (the benefits); we follow Him because He is the Bread of Life.

Kung alisin ba ang "himala," kung hindi ba ibigay ang "healing" o "financial breakthrough," sasambahin mo pa rin ba Siya? Or is your devotion dependent only on what He can give you?

Narito ang isang pagsusuri sa pagkakatulad ng mga deboto ng Black Nazarene at ng crowd sa John 6:26-27:

Ang pangunahing similarity ay nakaugat sa MOTIBO ng pagsunod.

1. Pagsunod para sa "Tinapay" (Physical Benefits) hindi sa "Mesiyas" (Spiritual Truth)

Sa John 6:26: Sinabi ni Jesus, "Hinahanap ninyo ako, hindi dahil sa nakita ninyo ang mga himala, kundi dahil nakakain kayo ng tinapay at nabusog."

Ang crowd ay sumunod kay Jesus hindi dahil na-realize nilang Siya ang Lord o ang Savior mula sa kasalanan. Sumunod sila dahil libre ang pagkain at napunan ang kanilang pisikal na pangangailangan.

Sa Black Nazarene Devotees: Marami (bagaman hindi lahat) ay pumupunta sa Traslacion dahil sa panata na nakabase sa pisikal na pakinabang: gumaling sa sakit, pumasa sa board exam, magkapera, o makaahon sa hirap.

Ang Similarity: Ito ay isang uri ng "Transactional Faith." Sumusunod sila dahil may nakukuha sila o gustong makuha na materyal o pisikal na ginhawa, sa halip na ang hangad ay ang mismong relasyon sa Dios at pagbabago ng puso.

2. Ang pagiging "Sign-Seekers" (Paghahanap ng Himala)

Sa Bible: Ang mga tao sa Capernaum ay humihingi pa ng "tanda" (sign) kay Jesus (v. 30) kahit kakatapos lang Niyang magpakain ng 5,000. Hindi sapat sa kanila ang presensya ni Jesus; gusto nila ng spectacle o miracle.

Sa Quiapo: Ang debosyon ay kadalasang naka-sentro sa "himala" ng poon. Ang focus ay nasa power ng imahen na magpagaling o magbigay ng swerte, sa halip na sa authority ni Kristo na magpabago ng buhay at magpatawad ng kasalanan.

3. Pagtatrabaho para sa "Pagkaing Napapanis"

Sa John 6:27: Ang rebuke ni Jesus ay: "Huwag ninyong pagpaguran ang pagkaing napapanis..."

Ang Similarity:

• Ang crowd noon ay naglakad nang malayo at nagpagod para lang sa tinapay na panandalian.

• Ang mga deboto ngayon ay nagpapakapagod, nakikipagsiksikan, nasasaktan, at minsan ay namamatay pa sa prusisyon (physical labor/works) para sa mga kahilingang panlupa (healing, success) na "napapanis" o lumilipas din.

Parehong grupo ay nagpapakita ng matinding zeal o sigasig, pero ayon kay Jesus, ito ay misplaced effort kung ang kapalit ay hindi ang buhay na walang hanggan.

Pastoral Application

Ang trahedya ay pareho silang nasa harap na ni Jesus (ang crowd ay kaharap Siya physically; ang mga deboto ay hawak ang pangalan Niya), pero hindi nila nakuha ang tunay na offer ni Christ.

Ang offer ni Jesus ay "I am the Bread of Life" (v. 35). Hindi Siya "tagabigay lang ng tinapay," Siya MISMO ang tinapay.

Sa madaling salita:

Ang similarity ay ang paghahangad sa "kamay" ng Dios (His blessings/miracles) habang binabalewala ang "mukha" ng Dios (His Lordship/Relationship). Gusto nila ang Gifts, pero hindi nila kilala o sinusunod nang tama ang Giver.

Every January, the streets of Manila turn into a sea of maroon and yellow. Millions of barefoot devotees flock to Quiapo for the Traslación, eager to catch a glimpse of the Poong Jesus Nazareno (Black Nazarene). We see men and women risking their safety just to touch the rope or wipe their towels on the image. We see tears, we hear desperate prayers, and we witness a kind of devotion that is rare in other parts of the world.

As a pastor, my heart goes out to every Filipino seeking hope. We are a people who love God deeply. But as we approach this feast, we must ask a hard but necessary question, one that concerns the salvation of our souls:

Is the Jesus represented by the Black Nazarene the same Jesus revealed in the Bible?

While the statue bears the name of Christ, a closer look at Scripture reveals three major differences between the Poong of tradition and the Savior of the Gospel.

1. The Jesus of the Bible is Alive, Not Helpless

The image of the Black Nazarene depicts a suffering Christ, bent under the weight of the cross, falling down. It captures a moment of His passion. However, the Bible tells us that Jesus did not remain in that state.

The Gospel is not just about the suffering of Jesus; it is about His victory. He died, but He also rose again. Today, the Jesus of the Bible is not carrying a cross in Quiapo. He is seated at the right hand of the Father in heaven, ruling with power and glory.

"But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God." Hebrews 10:12

We do not need to carry Him; He carries us. We do not need to protect Him from the crowds; He protects us.

2. Miracles Come from God’s Will, Not a "Panata" (Vow)

Many devotees believe that their Panata (vow) or the act of touching the statue is what grants them miracles. This creates a transactional relationship: "If I walk barefoot, God will heal me." "If I wipe my towel on the image, I will be blessed."

But the Jesus of the Bible teaches us about Grace. We do not twist God’s arm with our sacrifices. Miracles happen not because of the statue’s power or our intense effort, but because of God’s sovereign mercy.

Faith in the Bible is not faith in an object; it is faith in a Person. You can pray to Jesus right now in your room, without a statue, and He hears you just as clearly.

"God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth." John 4:24

3. The Mediator is Christ Alone, Not an Image

There is often a blur between veneration and worship. When we bow, kiss, and pin our hopes on a carved image, we are in danger of breaking the commandment against idolatry. The New Covenant reminds us that we no longer need shadows, types, or representations. We have the real thing.

We do not need a wooden medium to reach God. Jesus Christ Himself is the only Mediator.

"For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus." 1 Timothy 2:5

A Call to True Worship

To my fellow Filipinos, I admire your passion. But I pray that this passion is directed toward the Living Christ.

The wooden statue in Quiapo cannot save you. It cannot forgive your sins. It cannot walk with you through the valley of the shadow of death. Only the Risen Jesus of the Bible can do that.

This January, instead of looking at a dark wood carving, look to the Light of the World. You don't need to fight through a crowd to touch Him. You only need to humble your heart, repent, and trust in His finished work on the cross.

God is faithful, and He is closer to you than any statue ever could be.
