"Truth is relative."
"Kanya-kanyang reality lang 'yan, bes."
Common lines, 'di ba? We hear these all the time sa social media and even sa coffee shop kwentuhan. The idea is that truth is like a customized milk tea order depende sa taste mo, depende sa mood mo, or depende sa culture mo. Relativists think truth is just a perspective. So, if a group of people thinks doing something evil is "okay" for them, we’re supposed to just shrug and say, "Well, they have their reasons."
But let’s be real: Relativism is seriously flawed, and honestly, it doesn’t work in the real world.
1. Truth isn't "Lump of Clay"
Relativists like to think of reality as a wet lump of clay na pwede nating i-shape however we want. But truth is actually a relationship it’s a match-up with what is actual.
If I say, "The moon is made of quezo de bola," that is false. Why? Because it doesn’t match reality. As Christians, we believe the Bible is true not because it feels good, but because it conforms to the actual existence of God and His dealings with us.
Here’s the catch: The person saying "reality is whatever you make it" actually believes that statement is the absolute truth! If you disagree with them, they think you’re wrong. So, is their "lump of clay" idea just something they made up too? If it applies to everyone, then they just admitted there’s an objective truth. If it doesn’t apply to everyone, why should we even listen to them?
2. The "Self-Destruct" Button of Relativism
Relativism is like a phone that deletes its own OS the moment you turn it on. It’s self-contradictory.
Kapag sinabi ng isang tao na, "Walang absolute truth," basically sinasabi niya na, "It is absolutely true that there is no absolute truth." Labo, 'di ba? Even when they say, "That’s true for you but not for me," they are acting like that rule applies to everyone.
It’s like saying, "I am currently speaking no English words." The moment you say it, you’ve proven yourself wrong. Truth isn't based on how "sincere" your belief is. If I sincerely believe I can fly and jump off a building sa Makati, my sincerity won't stop gravity.
3. We are "Selective" Relativists
Notice how people are only relativists when it’s convenient? No one is a relativist about gravity, drug prescription labels, or their bank account balance.
Try mo singitan sa pila ang isang relativist or "hiramin" ang phone niya nang walang paalam. Biglang hindi na "relative" ang usapan. They will feel violated because they believe they have objective rights. Rights and relativism don't mix. Kung "it's all relative," then no one has the right to get mad at anything. But deep down, we know some things are just plain wrong.
4. The "Whatever" Agenda
So why is relativism so popular? Because it satisfies the urge for self-control. As one philosopher put it, we hate being at the mercy of the "real world."
Relativism is convenient because it makes no personal demands. It doesn't ask you to have integrity, to love God, or to help society. You can just say "Whatever" and live however you want. Under the New Covenant, we know that truth isn't just a set of rules it’s a Person. Jesus is the Truth. And that truth doesn’t chain us; it actually sets us free to live the way we were designed to.
John 8:32
"And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
Call to Action: Next time you're tempted to say "to each their own" just to avoid a tough conversation, ask yourself: Am I choosing what's convenient, or what's actually true? Let’s stop shaping reality like clay and start aligning our lives with the Reality that God has already revealed. Stand firm sa truth, but always with grace.
