1. Lesson Objective
To understand baptism’s biblical meaning, purpose, and significance as a public testimony of faith in Jesus Christ, while affirming that it does not contribute to our salvation.
2. Opening Prayer
"Heavenly Father, thank You for saving us by Your grace through faith in Christ. As we study baptism, help us to understand its meaning and to obey You joyfully. Amen."
3. Question & Answer Bible Study with Exegetical Commentary
Q1: What is baptism according to the Bible?
A: Baptism is an outward, public act that symbolizes our inward faith in Jesus Christ.
Verse: Matthew 28:19 – “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
Commentary:
Baptism is part of discipleship. It is done after one becomes a believer — a public declaration of belonging to Christ.
Q2: Does baptism save us?
A: The Bible teaches that salvation is by grace through faith alone, not by works or rituals.
Verse: Ephesians 2:8–9 – “For by grace you have been saved through faith… not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
Commentary:
Baptism follows salvation; it is not a condition for it. The thief on the cross (Luke 23:42–43) was saved without baptism, proving that salvation is God’s gift through faith.
Q3: What does baptism symbolize?
A: Baptism pictures our union with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection.
Verse: Romans 6:3–4 – “…all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death… we too might walk in newness of life.”
Commentary:
The act of immersion symbolizes dying to sin (going under the water) and rising to new life in Christ (coming out of the water).
Q4: Who should be baptized?
A: Only those who have personally repented and believed in Jesus Christ.
Verse: Acts 2:41 – “So those who received his word were baptized…”
Commentary:
Baptism is not for infants or unbelievers; it is for disciples who have consciously trusted in Christ.
Q5: Why is baptism important if it doesn’t save?
A: Baptism is an act of obedience and public testimony.
Verse: Acts 8:36–38 – “…Look, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?… and he baptized him.”
Commentary:
When we are baptized, we publicly identify with Christ and declare to others that we belong to Him.
