#8. Bible Study Guide - The Law of Christ: Our Rule for Christian Living

1. Lesson Objective

To understand what “the Law of Christ” means, how it differs from the old covenant law, and how it guides the believer’s life under the new covenant.

2. Opening Prayer

"Lord, thank You for setting us free from the law of sin and death. Teach us how to live in obedience to You, following the law of Christ. Fill us with love for You and for others. In Jesus’ name, Amen."

3. Question & Answer Bible Study with Exegetical Commentary

Q1: What is “the Law of Christ”?

A: The Bible teaches that the Law of Christ is the moral will of God revealed through Jesus and His apostles, summed up in the command to love God and love others.

Verse: Galatians 6:2 – “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

Commentary:

The “Law of Christ” centers on love, as modeled by Jesus (John 13:34). It is not the same as the Mosaic Law; it is the way of life for those under the new covenant.

Q2: How is the Law of Christ different from the Law of Moses?

A: The Bible teaches that believers are not under the old covenant law but under the new covenant commands of Christ.

Verse: 1 Corinthians 9:20–21 – “…though I am not under the law… I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law.”

Commentary:

Paul makes it clear he is no longer bound to the Mosaic Law but is still accountable to God under the Law of Christ. The standard is Christ’s teaching, not the Sinai covenant.

Q3: What is the foundation of the Law of Christ?

A: The Bible teaches that love is the fulfillment of God’s law for believers.

Verse: Romans 13:8–10 – “The commandments… are summed up in this one command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.”

Commentary:

Love is not a vague emotion but active obedience to God’s will, reflecting His character in our relationships.

Q4: What role does the Holy Spirit play in obeying the Law of Christ?

A: The Bible teaches that obedience is possible because the Spirit writes God’s law on our hearts and empowers us to live it out.

Verse: Galatians 5:22–23 – “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”

Commentary:

The Law of Christ is not kept by human effort alone but by the Spirit’s work in the believer’s heart.

Q5: What happens if a believer sins under the Law of Christ?

A: The Bible teaches that our salvation is secure in Christ, but God calls us to confess our sins and walk in repentance.

Verse: 1 John 1:9 – “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

Commentary:

The Law of Christ does not condemn the believer in Christ, but it exposes sin so that we turn back to God in humility.

4. Reflection & Call to Action

  • Reflection: Am I living each day guided by the love of Christ? Do my actions reflect His heart for others?

  • Call to Action:

    1. Pray daily for the Spirit’s help to obey Christ’s commands.

    2. Identify one area in your life where you need to show more Christlike love.

    3. Practice carrying someone’s burden this week as an act of obedience to the Law of Christ.

5. Closing Prayer

"Lord Jesus, You are our Master and Teacher. Thank You for giving us Your commands and Your Spirit to help us obey them. Help us to love as You have loved us. Amen."
