1. Lesson Objective
To understand that salvation comes through genuine repentance toward God and faith in Jesus Christ, as taught in Scripture, and to see how both are inseparable in the new birth.
2. Opening Prayer
"Heavenly Father, thank You for the message of the gospel that calls us to turn from sin and trust in Your Son. Open our hearts today to understand true repentance and faith, and help us live out these truths daily. In Jesus’ name, Amen."
3. Question & Answer Bible Study with Exegetical Commentary
Q1: What is repentance according to the Bible?
A: Repentance is a change of mind and heart that turns us away from sin and toward God.
Verse: Acts 3:19 – “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.”
Commentary:
The Greek word metanoeō means a deep change in one’s thinking, resulting in a change of direction. It is not just feeling sorry but a decisive turn to God.
Q2: What is faith according to the Bible?
A: Faith is trusting in Christ alone for salvation.
Verse: Hebrews 11:1 – “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
Commentary:
Faith is not blind wishfulness; it is a confident reliance on God’s promises and the finished work of Jesus on the cross.
Q3: Are repentance and faith separate steps or one response?
A: They are two sides of the same coin.
Verse: Acts 20:21 – “I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus.”
Commentary:
Turning away from sin (repentance) and turning toward Christ (faith) happen together. You cannot truly do one without the other.
Q4: Why is repentance necessary for salvation?
A: Because sin separates us from God, and we must forsake it to receive His forgiveness.
Verse: Isaiah 55:7 – “Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.”
Commentary:
Repentance prepares the heart to receive God’s mercy. It is a surrender to His will and a rejection of our rebellion.
Q5: Can faith without repentance save?
A: No. True faith is always accompanied by repentance.
Verse: James 2:17 – “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”
Commentary:
A profession of faith without a change of heart and life is counterfeit. Salvation always transforms the believer.
4. Reflection & Call to Action
5. Closing Prayer
"Lord, thank You that in Christ I can be forgiven and made new. Give me a repentant heart that continually turns to You in faith. Help me live as a testimony of Your saving grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen."
