#5. Bible Study Guide – The Law and the Gospel

1. Lesson Objective

To understand that the Law given through Moses was a covenant for Israel that pointed to Christ, and that in the New Covenant, believers are under the law of Christ — living by the Spirit in obedience motivated by love.

2. Opening Prayer

"Father in heaven, thank You for the clarity of Your Word. Help us see the difference between the old covenant law given to Israel and the new covenant law written on our hearts through Christ. Teach us to live in the freedom of the Gospel while walking in obedience to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen."

3. Question & Answer Bible Study with Exegetical Commentary

Q1: Was the Law of Moses given to all people or to Israel?

A: The Bible teaches that the Law of Moses was given specifically to Israel as part of God’s old covenant with them.

Verse: Deuteronomy 5:2–3 – “The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. It was not with our ancestors that the LORD made this covenant, but with us, with all of us who are alive here today.”

Commentary:

The Law at Sinai was a covenant package (including the Ten Commandments) for Israel, not a universal law code for all nations. It pointed forward to Christ and His kingdom.

Q2: What was the main purpose of the Law of Moses?

A: The Bible teaches that the Law was a temporary guardian until Christ came.

Verse: Galatians 3:24–25 – “So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.”

Commentary:

The Law exposed sin, separated Israel from the nations, and prepared the way for Jesus. When Christ came, He fulfilled it and brought a better covenant.

Q3: Are Christians still under the Law of Moses?

A: No. The Bible teaches that believers are under the new covenant and the law of Christ, not the old covenant law code.

Verse: Romans 7:4, 6 – “You also died to the law through the body of Christ… But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit.”

Commentary:

Through Christ’s death, believers are no longer bound to the old covenant law, but are led by the Spirit under the commands of Christ, which fulfill God’s moral will.

Q4: What is the law of Christ?

A: The Bible teaches that the law of Christ is the command to love God and love others as He loved us.

Verses:

Galatians 6:2 – “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

John 13:34 – “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

Commentary:

Christ’s commands are not a copy-paste of the Mosaic Law; they are His own instructions for His people, empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Q5: How do the Law and Gospel work together?

A: The Bible teaches that the Law reveals sin and our need for Christ, while the Gospel gives life and freedom to serve God.

Verse: Romans 8:3–4 – “For what the law was powerless to do… God did by sending his own Son… in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”

Commentary:

The Law points us to Jesus; the Gospel unites us to Him so that we live out God’s righteousness through the Spirit.

4. Reflection & Call to Action

  • Reflection: Am I trying to live as if I’m still under the old covenant law, or am I walking in the freedom of the new covenant under Christ?

  • Call to Action:

    1. Read Galatians 3–5 this week and note every time Paul contrasts the Law and the promise.

    2. Ask God to help you obey Christ’s commands by the power of the Spirit.

    3. Share with someone the difference between the old covenant law and the law of Christ.

5. Closing Prayer

"Lord Jesus, thank You for fulfilling the Law on our behalf and for bringing us into a better covenant. Teach us to walk by the Spirit, obeying Your commands out of love. Keep us from both legalism and lawlessness. In Your name, Amen."
